Given that SCI is the major shareholder and is controlled by Temasek, it can garner enough votes to take SMM out. Some of the big funds will give in to Temasek demand. Only minority shareholders like retails may not agree on the selling price but they do not have enough votes.  Recent deal of UE was a classic example. I didn't know it's a nation pride or security related company. That's new to me. But maybe subsequently wires become strong huh? But why didn't that pride get saved by nation? Wondering which is which now ... Sure SCI is a national pride. And STI components for sure. Is Hyflux in STI before? Hm. ..
