On March 28, a powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing a grid failure at the Sembcorp Myingyan Independent Power Plant in Mandalay. As a result, the plant experienced a " trip," which is a sudden shutdown of equipment to prevent damage. Despite the power loss, Sembcorp confirmed that the plant itself was not damaged. The 225MW gas-fired power plant, which began operations in 2018, provides electricity to about 5.3 million people. Sembcorp stated that its staff, who are not Singaporean, are safe, and the plant will be restarted once it is safe to do so, following instructions from local authorities. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 in magnitude, was followed by an aftershock of 6.7, and the death toll in Myanmar has surpassed 1,000.
