Talking about rental bikes...eg: mobike, obike..?...? Transportation in S' pore has already evolved the recent couple of years. Other tha PHVs, the usual taxi and the basic public transport, more and more users are doing PMDs. Also, not forgetting rental bikes, which most commontly have high utility along the PCNs to MRT station type of routes.    |

Sorry, One more thing I want to say. LTA awarded the TEL to SMRT instead of SBS transit is politcally unwise, although financially logical. SMRT is 30% cheaper in their bid, but has a super poor track record in train maintenance. SBS, on the other hand, has a good track record but 30% higher. If LTA awards the contract to SBS, it will face the Auidtor General questions for awarding a contract to a higher bidder.... But by awadring it to SMRT, the govt (not LTA) has to answer to the voters to explain by it awarded to a cheap and poor performer... it wil pay a political price.   |

Agreed with you this is a sad thing, but for short to medium term only. (3 to 5 years only).   What the govt wanted was, as you mentioned, to punish a small group pf taxi drivers, to punish the Comfortdelgro (CDG) for making ' too much" profit, but more importantly, govt wants to promote " SMART" Nation notion. But the govt had underestimate Grab aggressiveness, Grab willingness to burn cash, Grab' s ability to convince sponsors to give them free money to burn to increase market share.....now it is too late, or is it really too late? You can see since this year, govt has started to do something to rein Grab/Uber , but has not publicly admitted it... Examples:- 1) It increases diesel tax at petrol stations but rebate taxi operators a significant road tax rebates per taxi, Based on average mileage calculation, if CDG passes ALL rd. tax rebate to taxi drivers, driver should pay less for diesel (diesel tax minus road tax rebate), Private-hired vehicles (PHVs) drivers do not enjoy this because petrol cars, even diesel cars the rd. tax rebate is not big as compared to taxi rd. tax rebates. 2) PHV drivers need licence since 1 Jul 2017, this cause a severe shortage of PHV drivers, causing Grab to approach taxi drivers to drive PHVs, 3) PHV drivers&rsquo needs to pay income tax, because of electronics, PHV drivers have to declare 100% of their revenue and YRT cannot deduct their expenses like petrol, vehicle maintenance, and rd. tax, insurance this will reduce the real income of PHV drivers to a significant extent. Taxi drivers, on the other hand, receive cash (which can easily under declare) and CAN officially deduct their expenses like diesel (rd. tax, insurance, services and maintenance charges are covered under rental)   What is next?   All of us are well aware that the fact that Grab can survive until today is not due to uneven playing field, not due to govt ALLOWED them to stay, but it is due to they ARE BURNING CASH AT NOBODY BUSINESS. This is a true blue price war that Grab is declaring against CDG! The next qn is, can CDG fight and win this blood price war? I am 100% confident CDG can win eventually, why? 1) CDG is cash rich) 2) CDG has other business 3) CDG has business overseas, 4) CDG taxis are not expensive in the first place, 5) the most important is, GRAB cannot burn money for more years to come, I predict the most 3 years it can burn money, after it has to throw the towel.   Then our govt is very smart then. It also consumers to enjoy the cheap trips by PHV and at the same time, teach both taxi driver and CDG a painful lesson and I believe CDG will emerge stronger and more powerful after 3 to 5 years just like the 2008 financial crises. Sorry for the long post.....

That I agree, that' s why I' ve said " is a sad thing" ... But remember, in the first place, where did this 60000 PHV drivers come from? They didn' t take up the job right after school. A sizeable portion migrated from the Taxi industry. Plus another group of part-timers, plus yet another group who drives just " to pay for the car" . So, will this group who chose their vocation in the transport industry switch to full-fledged Tax-driving? Why yes, why no? If S' pore were to follow London, I think the first industry to be badly hit will be the used car market. The gov' t screwed up the transport industry by allowing PHV in the first place, without due considerations for existing taxi drivers. They have already contradicted their motion of a " CAR-LITE" Singapore. Their only excuse is " punish choosey taxi drivers" who hide during peak hours and other bad vibes regarding taxi drivers. Yes, there may be some bad eggs, but overall, taxi industry here is well-regulated. Compare the fares with those other developed cities round the world against the costs of car-ownership and we' ll have to agree in Singapore, we have the most affordable taxi services in the world. And the difficulty to get a Taxi during peak hours is a global phenomenom, and never about the conduct of a few drivers. This is the basic work of Demand vs Supply. Did you see a glut of empty cabs plying the roads and queueing up at the hotels, shopping centres and airports? Singapore need a maverick in the Transport ministry to solve this, not just anybody who simply increase the supply to flood the industry.

As a country , don't know if this is good to have many people become drivers? Not very progressive and productive.

Wat will happen if 60000 phv drivers out of job??...Govt won't allow this to happen....Comfort too slow to react...Grab is grabbing comfort drivers and customers away everyday...And yet they are doing lousy things to stop it...

I think it' s quite the contrary. If uber or/and grab were to lose their operating Licence in S' pore, (which is a sad thing), Comfort Delgro will flourish again. There are simply too many private cars taking the roles of rental cabs. And Singapore is too small a market. Our country is so much smaller than just a major city in China

Also could mean that uber now maybe desperately cdg to keep Singapore, they cannot afford to lose all key markets.

Comfort Delgro has no more parking space to accomodate returned taxis. Am told that 20 to 30 vehicles are returned to CD daily.  |
