Just my opinion - Grab's repeated extension of this discount feels like they're desperate. Also, where's TODAY getting the number of defecting drivers from? Certainly not Comfort, which means it's from Grab.
Which brings the question - how accurate/legit is the number? Is Grab actually trying to scare investors away from CDG by releasing such "news"? The revised figure comes at a really coincidental timing when CDG's price has reversed.

http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/more-3000-comfortdelgro-cabbies-could-join-rival-operators-grab CDG really needs to act fast and effectively to retain their drivers. On the over hand, why does Grab keep on extending the discount period? What is the number of drivers they are looking at? Is the number so far still not enough?

One of the potential scenarios: Uber itself pulls out of SG, but enters a JV with CDG. The JV will tap on CDG's fleet but with an operational system similar to Uber's, and at a lower operational cost since it's tapping on existing resources and EoS of both parties.

LTA could easily announce that work permit holders cannot drive private hire vehicles. If caught, work permit will be cancelled. Need to take care of older Singaporeans who has no other jobs. |

Besides filling the national coffers, I think this is one subtle ways the govt wants to help taxi drivers. It is an open secret that drivers under declare their income when most of their cars are cash.
But there are more ways to help the taxi drivers, the following measures that I can think of can help taxi companies and hopefully it will translate to lower rental to the taxi drivers.
1) vehicle inspections. Taxi must be inspected every 6 months but PHVs every 2 years, and new card first 3 years exempted. Taxi sold flow PHVs or at least based on mileage, since taxi nowadays travel less, inspection frequency would decrease too
2) when scraping taxis, LTA would pay PARF too, come on, taxi pays ARF too!
3) since only Singaporeans can be taxi drivers, then at least limit PHVs drivers to Singaporeans and PRs only, current rule is foreigners with work permit can also drive PHVs.

With the additiona of another player ( electric car rental ) come Dec, its this not adding another indirect competitor to CDG?  I think their taxi division is facing a lot of headwinds in the coming years....a total re-structure needed for domestic market like Spore.  Not vested |

Quite an irony, while government is pushing to smart nation, the biggest job creation seem to be phv drivers and food delivery men.

Cost per mile from US$3 to 90 cents. I guess this is what Grab and Uber has been testing with their tons of coupons and discounts, the viability of the business model once autonomous vehs becomes mainstream. They are collecting data (for future fine tuning) on how their dispatch AI backend systems will perform to the changing passenger environment when there is a surging " income opportunity" and when there is excess supply of taxis and phv driving prices rock bottom. Comfort still treating the technology of Uber and Grab as an after thought? Uber Singapore will have to do massive write downs if viable autonomous vehs comes out before they can sell off their huge PHV fleet.

It will happen and soon. And no one will be able to prevent it from happening.   Unlike during the 20th Century and earlier, the 21st Century and beyond will see new technologies being implemented at increasing speed. No more waiting for decades to see a new technology become reality. Driverless cars is SG is stone-age technology when compared to what our govt is already researching into --- flying taxis: http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/transport/singapore-in-talks-with-firms-to-try-out-flying-taxis.  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4345244/Flying-TAXIS-hitting-Singapore-2030.html
