China: Stocks flat after Monday' s rally

Stocks pull back after rally but resource shares firm

Chinese stocks were flat in early trading on Tuesday, after rallying more than two per cent the previous day on the announcement of a new securities regulatory chief, dealers said.

Investors took profits from the previous session' s 2 per cent gain, but some analysts expect buyers to return ahead of the annual meeting of China' s top legislature next month.

The blue-chip CSI300 index fell 1.0 per cent to 3,089.36 points, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.8 per cent to 2,903.33.

Most sectors fell but resources and energy shares extended their recent rally on a global pick-up in commodity and oil prices.

At the National People' s Congress, China' s leaders will deliver work reports and the government' s next five-year economic development plan will be finalised. Specific business sectors are often singled out for expansion.

The meeting will begin on March 5.

The S& P 500 is three trading days from reaching " trend exhaustion," according to infamous technical analyst Tom DeMark. " The foundation of the ongoing rally is suspect," warns DeMark, noting that if the market closes below these key levels in the next three days, DeMark warns " the decline is going to be sharp."

A top in the S& P 500 would also be confirmed should the S& P 500 finish below 1,926.82 on Tuesday(achieved), or close less than 1,917 on Wednesday or Thursday.

If any of those S& P 500 triggers occur, the benchmark index will decline at least 8.2 percent from Monday&rsquo s close to 1,786, a level last seen in February 2014, according to DeMark. Should the market top correspond with what he referred to as &ldquo bad news,&rdquo the S& P 500 could see deeper selling down to 1,736, an 11 percent decline. DeMark sees the ongoing market rally as temporary relief as investors exit short positions.

&ldquo We&rsquo ve seen some pretty vicious short-covering come in, which has caused the market to move up,&rdquo said DeMark. &ldquo When that happens, it really plays havoc with the market once the downside move begins.&rdquo

&ldquo The foundation of the ongoing rally is suspect,&rdquo DeMark, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, said in a phone interview. &ldquo The temporary buying produces a price vacuum beneath the market and accelerates the subsequent decline. The decline is going to be sharp.

Wall St. stumbles as oil slumps again

Wall Street stocks slid on Tuesday, hurt by pressure from a renewed drop in oil prices, undercutting momentum that had helped the market rebound from a sluggish start to the year.

The major U.S. indexes closed down more than 1 percent. Crude prices CLc1 LCOc1 settled down more than 4 percent as Saudi Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi effectively ruled out production cuts anytime soon.

Here' s more positive news out of China. With news like this, surely the world is not in such a dire state. Surely oil px' s not gonna stay low for too long more. Maybe China will continue to experience slower growth (bear in mind though it' s still growth n not recession) n transitional pain for another one-two yrs as it restructures into a more consumption-based economy. But things are really not that bad, n are likely to look more positive after that. (I' ve extracted part of the story from BT. Those interested can read it in full in BT).

[SINGAPORE] Spring Airlines Co has a message for Airbus Group SE - produce more planes because China needs them.

" Airbus isn' t producing fast enough," Stephen Wang, vice president of China' s biggest budget airline, said in an interview in Singapore Tuesday.

" There isn' t overcapacity in China. For the Chinese aviation industry, there' s still at least 10 golden years, that is 10 years of big growth."

Spring Air, which ordered 60 Airbus A320neos with a list price of US$6.3 billion in December, said it wants more aircraft than it has ordered because of rising demand in a country projected to become the world' s biggest air travel and aerospace market in two decades.

IMF chief sees ' tepid' growth for world economy

[DUBAI] The world economy is going through a " tepid" recovery, International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde chief said on Tuesday, adding that growth in advanced economies should be higher.

Speaking at a women' s forum in Dubai, the newly reelected Lagarde said global economic growth stood at 3.1 per cent last year, and is expected to grow by " a bit more than three per cent" this year, and a " little higher" in 2017.

" It is a growth but it is a tepid growth because the recovery that we see in the United States, Europe and a little bit in Japan as well could be bigger," she said.

" If you compare current growth to the potential output the economy should deliver, it is less," she added.

As for emerging economies, apart from India which is " doing pretty well," they are slowing down, said Lagarde.

Other emerging economies are either " deliberately" slowing down like China, or " in a pretty weak position" like Russia, Brazil or South Africa, she said.
