Turbulent times for SIA as Covid-19 calls time out to air travel
LATE in June, Singapore Airlines (SIA) said the board of NokScoot - a Thailand-based mid-haul low-cost carrier (LCC) in which it has a 49 per cent effective stake through subsidiary Scoot - has passed a resolution to liquidate the troubled airline amid the Covid-19 crisis.

While NokScoot' s associate value on the SIA book is currently zero given ongoing losses, SIA will record a total one-off charge of S$123.6 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2020. This comprises a S$106.9 million charge mainly due to impairment of SIA' s book value of seven Boeing 777-200 aircraft which had been leased to NokScoot, and provisions by Scoot of S$16.7 million to cover its share of liquidation and related costs.

The joint venture with Thailand-based airline Nok Air has been unable to record a full-year profit since its inception in 2014, due to difficulties in growing the network and the intense competitive environment. The Covid-19 pandemic compounded its woes.

When the joint venture between Scoot and Nok Airlines was sealed, SIA considered NokScoot an important component of its new diversified strategy at that time which included investments in airlines outside its home market.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, NokScoot was strategic for SIA because the national carrier was exploring growth opportunities in markets with large " true-origin/destination" domestic and international traffic and significant links to Singapore. The joint venture airline also served as a dominant growth strategy to indirectly check the growth of Thai AirAsia X, another Thailand-based mid-haul LCC affiliate of Malaysia' s AirAsia Group and a competitor of Scoot&rsquo s.

Thailand was Asia' s premier tourist destination and a logical hub for Scoot to expand to. The joint venture airline aimed to develop a new market segment and to offer Thai consumers and travellers to Thailand more travel options. But the Covid-19 pandemic changed all that, and is forcing a rethink in not just SIA, but airlines all over the world.

Further impairments can be expected. NokScoot' s seven Boeing 777-200ER are 17 to 19 years old. SIA will impair S$15.3 million on average per aircraft. According to Citi, SIA has another five 777-300 and seven 777-200ER aged 15 to 19 years old on the balance sheet. All these older 777s could be retired within fiscal year 2021, which may incur around S$180 million impairment in total. That is about 1.6 per cent of SIA' s market value.

While the S$107 million charge announced and the estimated S$180 million impairment risks may not sound a lot, it pays to bear in mind that SIA has yet to announce any major business resizing that may lead to additional impairments such as retiring Airbus 380s - an aircraft type with limited liquidity where SIA owns 15 on the balance sheet.

SIA may have secured fresh liquidity after recent rights and convertible bonds issues, but investors should be aware of the implications on its book value should it decide to downsize its fleet and have to book further impairments in this time of limited air traffic amid ongoing travel restrictions.

While demand for air travel will not disappear altogether, the Covid-19 pandemic has created an environment where passengers will demand to know a lot more about their flight than just the price of the ticket. At least, until a vaccine for Covid-19 is found.

To be able to resume flying and to make a profit are entirely two different things.  With so many baggages, interest payments, over hedging and keeping a bunch of fat cats in the redundant management team, how can SIA be able to produce a good financial result in September? I also wish SIA does good in September and be able to pay a good dividend but I am only day dreaming.

With no domestic routes, SIA is in a bad state, burning cash everyday. So much news on vaccines, but nothing confirmed. With so many restrictions, who will travel in the coming months.

I under TP as target price 1 year later. What happen from today till 08 July 2021 is mystery. It may plunge to below $3 to $3.80 1 year later, or it may also shoot up to $6 before plunging to $3.80 1 year later. Alas, it' s just a TP and it may change as an when analyst feel like it.

Business travel will fall even after covid. Working had become a new norm. So i dont count on business travel to recover to pre covid levels. As for flight passes, dont think it will help much. Maybe SIA could get a few million dollars in prepaid sales which it will burn in few days anyway. Its just a small drop in the ocean. Another round of MCBs is almost certain

I think SIA should start to sell some flight passes to further boost cash flow. They have earlier provided 120% refund in voucher (valid for 12months) for those who bought tickets and need to cancel. They can actually try to sell voucher with similar 20% bonus to allow people to purchase voucher first. They can get a lot of cash in this way, although not in a hurry for them now, this option should be at least considered before issuing another round of bond. After so long of border closure, i believe many people are waiting for the time to fly for holiday or business again. There should be quite good response if they sell voucher because people know SIA will never disappear. The good thing for voucher is not only provide cash for them, but also boost the future demand. If you have bought the voucher , you are more likely to use it for ticket booking compared to your cash on hand. Capitaland' s Ascot service residence has done so, providing up to 100% bonus for 2-year validity voucher. It is very attractive.  |

Some kind investors understand and are willing to go long.
Some angry investors who are only short view wants a plan and actual measures.
All these bad analysis call are just repeating and repeating and also threatening by shorting the shares down.
If you have a long term view, you don't bother..No need any announcements from SIA

That' s what I was saying. From the unemotional investor point of view a.k.a the market, a crisis of this magnitude needs clarity on what are the major cost cutting measures to be taken and that is cutting staff, and selling planes and since nobody buys planes now, the staff issue is a really big issue that needs to be addressed.  European airlines have done that, trimmed their overweight baggage, and they can move on. Taking government bail out is not sufficient. This crisis requires some drastic measures to be able to overcome before it is too late.
