Stocks notch slight gains as energy leads oil soars 3 pct U.S. equities closed slightly higher Thursday, amid surging oil prices, as investors digested fresh economic data as well as the minutes from the Federal Reserve' s July meeting. " We' re likely to continue trading in a very narrow range," said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones. " Overall, investors continue to balance when the Fed will raise rates against relatively good earnings," and other factors. U.S. crude settled at $ 48.22, up 3.06 percent, amid talks of a supply freeze. WTI also posted its best settle since July 1. " Crude oil is having another massive day and that' s preventing any big pullback," said Jeremy Klein, chief market strategist at FBN Securities. On the data front, weekly jobless claims fell 4,000 to 262,000, while the August Philadelphia Fed business index came in line with expectations. Leading indicators rose 0.4 percent last month, slightly more than expected. " There is not a lot of market-moving news, except for the Fed minutes," said Ernie Cecilia, CIO at Bryn Mawr Trust. He also said the minutes " create uncertainty within the Fed, which the market is interpreting as no action from the Fed. " Gold futures for December delivery settled at $ 1,357.20 per ounce, up $ 8.40. Read more.....   |

Europe seen higher as investors digest Fed minutes European stocks are expected to open higher on Thursday as markets digest minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve' s July meeting. The London FTSE index is expected to open 39 points higher at 6,898, the German DAX up 78 points at 10,616 and the French CAC up 31 points at 4,449, according to IG. Asian Shares Mixed Firm Aussie Dollar Puts Pressure in Local Stocks Shares in Asia were mixed Thursday, with some regional currencies rising against the weaker dollar, while China' s plans to further open its equities market gave a belated boost to Hong Kong stocks. The Nikkei Stock Average was down 1.0%, despite the yen reversing into weaker territory in afternoon trade. Elsewhere, Australia' s S & P / ASX 200 edged down 0.3% as the Aussie dollar strengthened following stronger-than-expected jobs data. Hong Kong' s Hang Seng Index jumped 1.6% to 23164.69 points, its highest level since early November. Seoul' s Kospi added 0.3%, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.2%. " The main mover [of markets] is the dollar falling," said Tareck Horchani, deputy head of Asian Pacific sales trading at Saxo Capital Markets. Minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve' s July meeting, released late Wednesday, showed a split among board members on the timing of an interest rate increase, dampening expectations for a near-term rate rise. Some investors had expected a more hawkish tone from the central bank, after two officials waxed optimistic on the economy earlier in the week. Fresh expectations for continued low interest rates sent the U.S. dollar weaker, driving up some of region' s main currencies. In Hong Kong, the city' s share market had a belatedly positive reaction to China' s confirmation that the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect program will proceed later this year. China on Tuesday gave the green light to a stock-trading link between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, which would let global investors buy Shenzhen stocks, and Shenzhen investors buy Hong Kong stocks, which is expected to boost trading flows into both markets. " [Investors] are still trading on the expectation that liquidity will be abundant and quality assets will be supported," said Alex Wong, director of asset management at Ample Capital Ltd, who manages a $ 100 million fund. In mainland China, shares were trading about flat as Beijing signalled that its crackdown on speculative trading continues. Asian Indexes

Asia: Stocks rise as Fed minutes spur optimism dollar weakens Asian stocks rose and the greenback languished near two-month lows on Thursday after minutes of the US Federal Reserve' s latest meeting showed policymakers were in no rush to raise interest rates. Hong Kong shares was the top gainer in Asia with a 1 per cent rise, while a stronger yen, thanks to the Fed' s cautious outlook, pulled Japan' s Nikkei back 0.5 per cent. Asian Indexes

Nikkei drops in early Asian trade as yen climbs and trade data  disappoint Japanese shares dropped on Thursday morning in an otherwise positive Asian trading session, as a stronger yen weighed on sentiment. The Nikkei 225 declined 1 percent, while the Topix index was down 1.02 percent. The Japanese yen strengthened to 99.75 against the dollar, a touch lower than an earlier session high of 99.64, and compared with levels near 100.95 on Wednesday afternoon Asia time. Analysts pointed to the meeting minutes released by the U.S. Federal Reserve overnight, which showed members of the Federal Open Market Committee had a generally upbeat view on the U.S. economy and labor market, but mostly agreed more data were needed before increasing rates again. " They received no additional clarity on whether rates will rise by December and were simply told that the Fed is still in wait-and-see mode," Lien added. In the commodity space, oil prices were mixed in Asian trade. U.S. crude futures traded nearly flat at $ 46.83 a barrel, while global benchmark Brent was down 0.28 percent at $ 49.71. Asian Indexes

US stocks close mostly higher after Fed minutes utilities jump more than 1 pct U.S. stocks closed mostly higher on Wednesday as investors digested the release of the Federal Reserve' s July meeting. The Dow Jones industrial average closed about 20 points higher, with 3M contributing the most gains. The S& P 500 gained approximately 0.2 percent, with utilities advancing more than 1 percent. The Nasdaq composite underperformed, barely closing above break-even. U.S. Treasurys traded higher after the minutes were released, with the two-year note yield at 0.73 percent and the benchmark 10-year yield at 1.55 percent. " It appears there are not a lot of fireworks ... that came out of this set of minutes," said Bill Northey, chief investment officer at the Private Client Group at US Bank. He also said " this is setting up for one more move" which, in his opinion, will take place in December. Some voting Federal Reserve policymakers expect that a U.S. interest rate increase will be needed soon, although there is general agreement that more data is needed before such a move, according to the minutes from the Fed' s July policy meeting. " Some ... members anticipated that economic conditions would soon warrant taking another step in removing policy accommodation," the Fed said in the minutes.. Mark Spellman, portfolio manager at Alpine Funds, said after the minutes were released that " the market doesn' t believe what they say, though." " In the last couple of days, you had some Fed governors saying the market isn' t discounting enough of a chance of a rate hike &mdash and the minutes that, too." Still, he said " in those minutes, I don' t think there' s anything that' s going to change a lot of opinions" about the Fed. The Dow fell as much as 80 points at its session lows, before the three major indexes began paring losses in early afternoon trade. " There is some anxiety that the Fed may not be as dormant as some people might think," Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, said before the minutes were released. Investors were looking for signs and clues about when the next rate hike will be coming, particularly after hawkish comments made by some Fed officials. " We got some vocal Fed [officials] suggesting a rate hike soon, but I don' t think they will hike in September," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. On Tuesday, New York Fed President William Dudley said a rate hike could come next month. Meanwhile, Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said the U.S. economy is strong enough to withstand at least one increase this year. On the oil front, U.S. crude rose 0.45 percent to settle at $46.79 a barrel, after Energy Information Administration data showed oil inventories decreased by 2.5 million barrels last week Overseas, European stocks fell, with the Stoxx 600 index slipping 0.83 percent. In Asia, stocks closed mixed, with the Nikkei 225 rising 0.9 percent and the Shanghai composite ending marginally lower. Gold futures for December delivery settled $8.10 lower at $1,348.80 per ounce. Europe seen higher as investors await Fed minutes European stocks are expected to open higher on Wednesday, ahead of the closely-watched release of the U.S. Federal Reserve' s latest minutes. Global markets are looking ahead to the release of the minutes from the Fed' s meeting in July for clues on where the central bank might be heading in terms of the timing of interest rate rises. US stocks closed lower Tuesday ahead of the release of the minutes, due on Wednesday at 2 pm ET. The Fed could still raise interest rates twice this year, with a move in September a possibility, Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said on Tuesday, Reuters reported. " I would not rule out September. If the meeting were today, I think the economic data would justify a serious discussion" of whether to raise rates now, Lockhart told reporters after a speech in Knoxville on Tuesday. Asian Indexes

Asia poised for flat open as US stock losses offset rise in oil Futures pointed to a flat open for Asian markets on Wednesday, as a lower finish in the U.S. stock market offset the impact of a rise in oil prices. Oil prices continued its advance on Tuesday, climbing to near five-week highs, supported likely by further OPEC news and a relatively weaker dollar. Global benchmark Brent was up 1.8 percent to $ 49.23 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures gained 1.8 percent to $ 46.58.   |

US stocks close lower ahead of Fed minutes telecoms fall 2 pct Stocks closed lower Tuesday, with telecommunications lagging, as investors awaited the release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve' s July meeting. " I think we had a little bit of profit taking. We had that trifecta concurrent record high yesterday. Part of it might be driven by the fact that we do have the Fed minutes coming out tomorrow afternoon. I do not ' think that will be a big impact but sometimes we get a reaction, " said Randy Frederick, managing director, trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab. The Fed is scheduled to release the minutes of its July meeting Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. " I think the market got a little bit overbought and this is just a correction to that overbought condition," said Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at Baird. " This is a normal pullback after a strong rally," said Adam Sarhan, CEO of Sarhan Capital. Investors also kept an eye on the yen, which broke below the key 100 mark for the first time since June after San Francisco Fed President John Williams said in a paper that central banks might have to raise inflation targets, focus more on growth and back much looser fiscal policy in future. That said, New York Fed President William Dudley said in a Fox Business Network interview the Fed may raise rates as soon as next month. " We' re edging closer towards the point in time where it will be appropriate I think to raise interest rates further , " Dudley said, citing strength in the labor market. " I think the last think the Fed want' s to see is a bubble in the stock market," Baird' s Bittles said, adding Dudley' s goal with his remarks was to keep the market on edge. Gold futures for December delivery settled up $ 9.40 at $ 1,356.90 per ounce after Dudley spoke. Market expectations for a rate hike next month remained low after Dudley' s interview, however. According to RBS, the odds of a September rate hike rose to 20 percent from 18 percent. Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said later on Tuesday that the U.S. economy is likely strong enough to withstand at least one rate hike before the end of the year. " The market loves easy money, and any data that may suggest a rate hike, will spook investors a little bit," Sarhan of Sarhan Capital said. US economic data came in mixed, with the July reading of the consumer price index (CPI) coming in unchanged -. Matching expectations- and July housing starts coming in at a five-month high Industrial production for the same month, meanwhile, rose 0.7 percent, more than the 0.3 percent expected increase. Overseas, European stocks fell, with the Stoxx 600 index falling 0.79 percent. In Asia, the Nikkei 225 dropped 1.62 percent, while the Shanghai composite slipped 0.49 percent. U.S. crude for September delivery settled at its highest level since July 6, at $ 46.58 a barrel. Read more....   |

Singapore shares close lower in low volume It was the second successive day that dollar volume fell below the S $ 1 billion mark. On Monday, Wall Street' s three major indices closed at all-time highs, only the second time this year this has occured. However, perhaps because the Dow futures on Tuesday dropped about 35 points in Asian trading hours, trading here was lacklustre, with activity dull and devoid of many redeeming features. " We are all glued to our screens," said a dealer. " The TV screens, that is. The market is on holiday so we might as well watch the Olympics." That this was no exaggeration was confirmed by other traders who endorsed the view that the TV screen was much more watchable than the trading screen. Pressure on the banks eased in the morning session most likely due to short-covering rather than any real pick-up in demand. In the afternoon, all three weakened although in UOB' s case, it traded ex-dividend.   |
