UOB Kay Hian downgrades DBS to &lsquo hold&rsquo and maintains &lsquo buy&rsquo on OCBC Banks could see a gradual weakening in their asset quality as the conflict in the Middle East rages on, says UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH) analyst Jonathan Koh. In an Aug 24 note, Koh lowered his rating on Singapore&rsquo s banking sector from overweight to market weight. Koh says UOBKH&rsquo s preferred pick within the sector is the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) (SGX:O39) . This is because of the bank&rsquo s strategic shift to accelerate growth. Koh has maintained his &ldquo buy&rdquo call on OCBC. His target price of $32.50 is based on a target forward PB multiple of 2.16 times based on FY2027 earnings. &ldquo OCBC is more sensitive to growth in wealth management fees, which accounted for 63% of its fee income,&rdquo Koh writes. &ldquo It has delivered the strongest and most diversified 2Q2026 results with earnings growth at 22% y-o-y, driven by wealth, trading income and insurance.&rdquo Separately, Koh has downgraded DBS Group (DBS) (SGX:D05) to &ldquo hold.&rdquo His target price of $74.70 is based on a target forward PB multiple of 2.92 times based on FY2027 earnings. Koh says DBS&rsquo s valuation is stretched though it continues to be the leader in wealth management and its scale of earnings. While Koh accepts that Singapore&rsquo s banks deserve to trade at a premium because of their structural resilience, he says their borrowers may be exposed to the sustained disruptions taking place in the energy markets and on shipping routes due to the prolonged tensions in the Middle East. Heightened energy prices could dampen the overall business environment, putting pressure on sectors such as transportation, storage, and communications. Both DBS and OCBC have exposures to these sectors at 7.4% each. United Overseas Bank (UOB) (SGX:U11) , which is not rated by UOBKH, has a relatively lower exposure at 5.5%. &ldquo Highly leveraged borrowers in transportation, logistics and aviation sectors [could] become financially stressed,&rdquo Koh writes. &ldquo Companies exposed to supply chain disruptions or higher operating expenses may face refinancing challenges.&rdquo As of 2.31 pm, OCBC' s shares are trading 0.13% higher at $31.53 while DBS' s shares are trading 0.17% lower at $76.27. |

DBS CEO says AI&rsquo s pace could test corporate safeguards Resiliency should come before speed and innovation, but artificial intelligence (AI) may force companies to trade one for the other. At the Singapore Computer Society' s Tech3 Forum, DBS Group CEO Tan Su Shan says the pace at which new AI models and patches arrive is straining how companies normally put technology into production. &ldquo Resiliency over speed. Resiliency over innovation. It is resiliency above everything else. But, in this [AI era], we might have to balance a trade-off between resiliency and speed,&rdquo she says. The question is live at DBS because AI agents are now being built so widely inside the bank. Employees build and use their own agents on DBSGPT, an internal platform that sits on the bank' s own premises and does not allow application programming interfaces (APIs) to pull all of its data, shares Tan. AI agents that touch production systems face tighter limits. This matters because AI agents can act across systems rather than simply generate a response to a prompt. Once they handle customer information or are allowed to act within a business process, the consequences of a weak control become more serious. &ldquo If our [AI] agents are going to talk to customers, [we must] make sure the data is correct,&rdquo says Tan, adding that companies need to know who owns the data, who can use it and who is accountable for it. Cybersecurity sharpens the same point, as AI agents can find and string together weaknesses faster than a human attacker can. &ldquo Think about the autonomous agent force in the world and how they can attack you, stringing together all the vulnerabilities, identifying them quickly in seconds,&rdquo says Tan. Those risks are why companies test new technology before it goes live. Yet, the pace of AI releases is putting those safeguards under pressure. At DBS, new software would ordinarily pass through the bank' s full software development lifecycle, including user acceptance testing, before it goes anywhere near production. &ldquo But what if you need to speed up? Do you [then] give up a bit of the resiliency to have speed?" asks Tan. The answer depends on what the AI is allowed to do. Companies may accept greater flexibility when it helps employees research, write and find information. They will need a different standard when it can change records, deal with customers or operate inside systems that keep the business running. Tan' s advice was for companies to work that policy out for themselves. " In what circumstances do you give up resiliency for speed?" she asks. |

DBS planning successor for long-term chairman Seah &mdash Bloomberg (Aug 19): DBS Group Holdings Ltd is working on a succession plan for Peter Seah, who has been the Singapore bank&rsquo s chairman for more than 16 years, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Seah, 79, has fulfilled his responsibilities in guiding the country&rsquo s largest bank since he joined the DBS board in 2009 and became chairman a year later, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. Seah, a non-executive chairman, is also chairman of the board executive committee and DBS&rsquo Hong Kong unit. In addition, he is a member of the audit, board risk management, technology, compensation, management development and nominating committees, according to DBS&rsquo website. Seah was re-elected as chairman at the most recent annual shareholders&rsquo meeting in March. &ldquo Mr Peter Seah remains non-executive chairman of DBS Group Holdings,&rdquo the bank said in response to queries from Bloomberg. A veteran banker with many senior roles, Seah is credited for being instrumental in driving the growth of DBS, thanks to his good working relationship with former bank chief executive officer Piyush Gupta and his successor Tan Su Shan. Over recent months, DBS&rsquo stock price has soared, backed by strong earnings and a thriving wealth management business, catapulting the lender to become one of the world&rsquo s largest banks by market value. The Ministry of Manpower said on Wednesday that Seah is resigning from his chairman post at the National Wages Council for personal reasons. Seah has also been the chairman of Singapore Airlines Ltd since 2017. The city-state&rsquo s flagship carrier said in July 2025 when Seah was re-elected that it was &ldquo critical&rdquo he remains on its board as non-independent and non-executive chairman to provide leadership and continuity as the company navigates global uncertainties and challenges ahead. Elsewhere, he sits on the board of GIC Pte Ltd, Singapore&rsquo s sovereign wealth fund. He is also a member of the country&rsquo s Council of Presidential Advisers. A banker for more than three decades, Seah was CEO of the former Overseas Union Bank until 2001. |
