Defying odds, Myanmar-based conglomerate posts its strongest overall performance in the company&rsquo s history amid a challenging operational landscape, but are investors convinced?


Myanmar has not been an easy market to operate in. Downside risks include persistent security challenges, macroeconomic instability, and natural disasters such as the devastating earthquake that struck the country&rsquo s north in March 2025. Against this backdrop, Singapore Exchange-listed Yoma Strategic Holdings, which has diversified interests across property, finance, consumer and vehicle distribution, has remained resilient and continued to thrive.


For its FY2026 ended March 31, net profit rose 75.7% y-o-y to US$23.9 million ($30.7 million) while revenue grew 13.7% to a record US$233.2 million. Yoma Land and Yoma F& B both posted record revenues, while Yoma Motors more than doubled its top line. Its CFO, JR Ching, describes the set of results as the &ldquo strongest overall financial performance&rdquo as the company celebrates its 20th year on the Singapore bourse. .............

The positives

Revenue and profitability are genuinely improving. Full-year revenue grew 13.7% to US$233M, net profit nearly doubled to US$23.9M, and operating cash flow more than doubled to US$48M &mdash all solid improvements. Property sales are the main engine, with the Sandakuu project at Pun Hlaing Estate a standout success (181 of 182 units sold). F& B (KFC + YKKO) and Motors also had strong years. There' s a healthy US$90M unrecognised revenue backlog from sold but not yet completed property units, giving visibility over the next 18&ndash 24 months.
 

The warnings

A few things to watch carefully:
  • No dividend. For the second year running, no payout. Management cited ongoing project commitments and deleveraging priorities.
  • Profit quality. A US$31M property revaluation gain is included in net profit. Strip that out and the underlying operating picture is thinner &mdash this gain is paper-based and non-cash.
  • Debt profile shifted short-term. Current borrowings jumped from US$63M to US$109M due to reclassification of maturing loans. This increases refinancing risk, especially in Myanmar' s difficult banking environment.
  • Finance costs are high. At US$32M annually, interest expense eats significantly into earnings. New perpetual securities carry 18&ndash 20% per annum distributions &mdash very expensive capital.
  • Wave Money is struggling. Revenue fell 29% as cash-based (OTC) transactions decline. Goodwill was impaired and the business plan is being overhauled toward a digital model &mdash which costs more upfront. This is a multi-year transition with no guaranteed outcome.
  • Myanmar country risk remains the central concern. All operations are Myanmar-based. Currency volatility, import restrictions, conflict-related disruptions, and limited access to international capital markets are persistent risks that no management team can fully control.

Bottom line for a retail investor

Yoma is showing real operational progress and the property pipeline is well-sold. However, the stock remains a high-risk bet tied almost entirely to Myanmar' s political and economic stability. The lack of dividends, expensive capital structure, Wave Money' s struggles, and heavy reliance on non-cash property gains mean this requires a long time horizon and a high risk tolerance. It is not a defensive or income-generating investment.

What management is saying

The tone is cautiously optimistic. They are focused on: completing the property pipeline and launching new projects (including outside Yangon), growing F& B with 6&ndash 8 new restaurants planned, accelerating Wave Money' s digital transition, and reducing debt &mdash targeting gearing in the " low- to mid-teens" over time. They also flagged a potential move to increase their stake in Mandalay Airport, which could become a recurring income stream.
