Interesting insights: Forum: Used electric car batteries may pose problems few years from now There have been several articles highlighting the merits of electric vehicles in the papers in recent weeks (Plugging into the future, March 22). While I am aware of the plus points of electric vehicles, such as less pollution and less noise, I am concerned that there is almost no discussion of the future impact of millions of used electric car batteries on the climate and global landscape, and beginning from only a few years down the road. The Sunday Times report does not touch on the fallout from the widespread and prolonged use of vehicles powered by batteries. There must be a discussion of the very real issue of large numbers of used batteries posing a problem for future generations. This is our duty to them. Bachan Singh |

To provide a steady supply of feedstock for recycling, Dr Khor said, NEA will implement a Deposit Refund Scheme for beverage containers by 2022. This will be the first phase of the government' s extended producer responsibility approach for packaging waste management. Dr Khor said countries like Norway and Germany have achieved high recycling rates of over 80 per cent for beverage containers after implementing a similar scheme, adding that the government will conduct industry consultations this year. In addition, it will be mandatory from July for companies that supply regulated goods into Singapore as well as retailers to report data annually on the amount of packaging that they put into the market. " This will make companies more aware of their packaging use and encourage them to optimise it, thereby minimising waste and also reducing business costs," Dr Khor said. As for electronic waste, Dr Khor said NEA will launch a tender to appoint an operator for the Producer Responsibility Scheme. The operator will take charge of the collection and proper treatment of e-waste in Singapore. TES-B, a new lithium-ion battery recycling facility will be completed this year, while two recycling facilities by EWR2 and SMC Industrial will be completed by mid-2020 and mid-2022 respectively. * |

Shenzhen-listed Sotech to buy Chinese lithium battery business for $110m Chinese automation solutions provider Sotech Smarter Equipment plans to acquire an 88 per cent stake in Guangdong-based lithium battery business Super Components for 774 million yuan ($110 million). Shenzhen-listed Sotech is picking up the majority stake in Super Components from eight shareholders by issuing shares and paying cash, Sotech revealed in a recent filing with the stock exchange. The buyer company intends to proceed the payment by offering almost 310 million yuan ($44 million) in cash. The rest will be settled through the issuance of about 82.97 million shares at a price of 5.6 yuan ($0.8) apiece, according to the filing. The offer valued Super Components at over 881 million yuan ($126 million). Through the acquisition, Sotech aims to combine the engineering design and equipment R& D capabilities of the two companies, and to extend its product matrix in the special equipment manufacturing industry. The deal is expected to increase its profitability by integrating its technical advantages and realizing the economies of scale, said the company. Established in 1997, Sotech primarily delivers robot-enabled automated production solutions and other customized automation equipment for clients to produce components of consumer electronics products. Its offerings include 3D glass hot-bending machines, glass engraving machines, high-pressure deburring and washing machines, among others. The company went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2011. The revenue of Super Components reached 231 million yuan ($33 million) in the period between January and July 2019. Its revenues were 330 million yuan ($47 million) and 163 million yuan ($23 million) in 2018 and 2017, respectively. |
