Update SMRT breakdown could result in $50 million fine, says Maybank Kim EngJuly 8, 2015 : 5:59 PM Singapore' s largest MRT breakdown in its 27 years of operating history could result in a fine of as much as $ 50 million on operator SMRT Corporation , according to Maybank Kim Eng analyst Derrick Heng in a July 8 note. The three-hour-long evening peak-hour disruption of service on the two mainlines, North-South and East-West Lines on July 7, affected some 250,000 commuters. The disruption came hours after SMRT, the operator of these two lines, held its annual general meeting where shareholders passed all resolutions Among the resolutions were a 99.92% " yes" vote for directors' fees -. Including CEO Desmond Kuek' s total package of between $ 2.25 million and $ 2.5 million. In a July 8 press conference co-chaired with regulator Land Transport Authority, Kuek apologised for the breakdown. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in a Facebook post later in the evening, said he is " very concerned" with the breakdown, although trains ran without hitches today thus far. However, the root cause of the power trip has not been identified. " We are still very worried that the problem may recur. Hope we identify and resolve the faults quickly, to prevent further inconvenience to commuters," he said. Heng notes that back in Feb 17 2014, the parliament passed a bill to increase the maximum fine for every rail disruption to 10% of an operator' s annual fare revenue for the rail line affected. The previous maximum penalty was just $ 1 million, which was slapped on the operator for the two major disruptions back in December 2011. In between, there were another four incidents between Oct 2013 and May 2014, which led to a total fine of $ 1.6 million. In FY2015, SMRT generated $ 644 million in rail revenue for the North-South and East-West Lines, as well as the Circle Line, which translates into a maximum 10% fine of $ 64.4 million. The Circle Line, which sees lower traffic, was not affected in yesterday' s disruption and thus Heng estimates the maximum penalty to be closer to $ 50 million. " While the actual fine may be much lower than the maximum possible, it nonetheless poses risks to our forecasts," states Heng. For now, pending further investigations and actions by the regulators, Heng is maintain his " hold" call and price target of $ 1.57 on SMRT pegged to 20 times FY16 earnings. SMRT shares closed the day four cents lower, to $ 1.505.   |

There are talents out there in other countries who can operate and maintain MRT systems with much less problem than our SMRT. I would even dare say that the MRT in China is much better than ours, as I have been taking Shanghai MRT many times there. The crowd carrying capacity per car is much higher, and the car speed is also much higher than ours. We like to laugh at Chinaman technology and dont have the humility to learn from them.  It is time to eat humble pie and accept the fact that when we need foreign expertise and talent, we must go and hire them. I dont think we need to pay $2.5M to get a talent in. Bureaucrats are good at maintaining systems but not good at solving engineering problems. We need some foreign engineering talents with years of real experienceat taking high level positions in SMRT. Uncle Lui should be daring enough to make this change. I have heard from the vineyard that China is able to develop high speed rail technology so fast is because they employ many retired Japanese engineers to work for them. Japs dont need visa to go China, so talents get imported in easily without hassle.  Again, these Japs dont cost $2.5M each.

Complain not happy then dont take mrt or buses lor. Take cab or buy a car and drive. Its your choice. Just like hdb if think system is questionable u can dont buy flats from hdb. There are other choices like landed property or simply just go out of sg to live if really so dissatisfied. Else comment so much got wat use.

If they need to shutdown for a week to rectify the problem then better do so.  But make sure after a week shutdown they give a good and reliable service and no more breakdown.  As far as I can recall, this frequent breakdown has been there since like 3-4 years ago until now, I bet they still do not know what need to be fixed.   |

SMRT too good already.  Operate everyday with no off days and only do servicing in the middle of the night that' s why will have occasionally breakdowns. If SMRT got schedule maintainence - like shutting down their systems for 1 or  2 days over the weekend(or a period of time)  for a planned maintainence, maybe the possibility of a breakdown will be greatly reduced.   Now SMRT are just servicing and servicing the public with no leave or off and get sick itself.  Thankful to SMRT that they got it up in 3.5hours.  And that SMRT have the courage to shutdown the whole system to do a thorough rectification.  Thank you again!     |

Exactly. Fining them won' t solve the problem. LTA should impose this - for each breakdown, the specific operator must provide a week of free ride. - there should be a system to judge if it is worthy to increase fare base on the level of service (aka number of break down). As breakdown shows bad quality of service then it is not worth for fare increase until they dolve the problem.   Each break down they will get 1 mark.   Each mark show how many of years before they can ask for fare increase.   This also means number of years they have to improve their service.   If within a year no breakdown they will be rewarded by reducing 1 mark.   if we really implement this, i wonder how many years they have to wait before they can ask for fare increase )

Hahas. Dont care. As long gimme free ride happy enough. I dont take bus. When i was in msia lastime, bus broke down have to switch other buses from other co and pay additional trip. So we are in singapore and shall not complain. At least public transport managed by one main operator which is smrt. U go msia the public transport managed by many different private operators created many headaches for passengers. Not to mention abt other countries. Infrastructure in sg alry considered quite good. Once in a while hiccup just got to accept as life. Chill. Otherwise take cab must pay abt $15-$20 per trip. How?
