Well, these monopoly companies can be listed to serve the purpose of distributing profit back to the commoners. We buy their shares and look for consistent dividend yield of 4 to 7%. That is doing good for the masses. What has been wrong is that the leader puts a big chunk of profit into his own pocket first.

Wonder why main stream media is very quite about this. Perhaps now people realise even if you change out the colonel and put in a professor, the problems wont be easily solved in a short period of time and we will continue to see train breakdowns for a while? Auntie Saw must be feeling very sore about it, taking all the hits and shits unnecessarily

This one I agree totally.  But actually there are two operators although it' s as good as one cos there' s very little they can differentiate.  Anyway, the problem with listing  monopolies of this kind is that people regard them as  div cash cows n form expectations of the tp based on expectations of x or y  cts of div.  Over time, the div n tp expectations are raised.  So, the coy is under pressure to produce good financial results year after year (can NOL do that?) to meet these seemingly insatiable expectations.    But instead of finding ways to cut cost n/or improve processes, they take the easy way out by slaughtering commuters.  Somehow, they get their way.  That' s why monopolies like these shd never be listed.  Same goes for SPost.  Last yr, Oct, increased postage n got a big story  into  Parliament to make it sound so altruistic.  Within months announced increase in div payout.  Again, does NOL have this luxury?

Then one of these days they are gng to start charging for breathing in oxygen.
It is ridiculous for them to profit frm commoners' daily neccessity. Then we will all be like "bo bian, lan lan lo, must take train what." This sucks. Being a commoner sucks.

i feel that monopoly companies providing essential services to the public should not be listed in the first place, like sgx & smrt.. their focus should be providing better services to the public, and not aiming to get more profits to be accountable to shareholders.. they would be better for public  to be govt owned if they are going to be monopoly.. now the public is put on the chopping board.. there' s no other train service providers & only smrt is in the playing field.. being a monopoly, they can raise the fares when opportunity comes as there' s no alternative train providers for public to choose from.. every year, smrt is constantly trying to raise fares.. if there is no need for govt review to approved fare hikes, smrt wont be shy to raise fares by many folds, while at the same time, providing us with bad services to cut cost, and  raise profits for shareholders.. they are not able to raise fares a lot or give too much bad services, ' cos they need to be accountable to the govt & control public outroar.. |

This type of mundane ops need what talent?  NOL is the coy that needs real talent to turn it around.  This one just squeeze commuters for more fares n raise rents for retain space will make a lot of money already.  Improve ops just put more trains n buses to run.  What' s so special?

with the S$2.5 million, Singapore can easily hire 6 ~8 retired Japanese expatriates to run SMRT efficiently. When we need foreign talent, this is the time we need to be humble and learn from real experts out there in another country who dont think of putting millions in their own pocket just a year on the job.

With the rail financing as a bonus, and future growth such as new stations opening = retail expansion and overseas engineering business   I see SMRT has potential to test at least $2, possible testing previous high. It will be a slow and steady ride up. |

to be fair, i think there' s slight slow improvement base on my commuting experience.. last time when commuting during peak hr after work from jurong east mrt via north south line, the queue to board the train is so horrible and the platform is filled with ppl.. it takes a really long time for smrt to finally increase the frequency of the trains during this peak hour and the queue reduce.. many more should still be improved, like the reliability of the train timing.. when the tv screen says like 3min to next train arrival, many times the train dont arrive at the time stated.. train sometimes still move slowly especially at peak hours, and we often heard the broadcast saying " due to train ahead, the train will be delay" .. still got lots of improvement, if we compare singapore train timing & japan' s.. im amazed at japan transport timing reliability.. when they say 3min on arrival, they meant 3min, whether it' s their bus or trains.. having said that, i dont think the slight improvement we see warrants a 100% rise in smrt ceo pay.. i understand pay rise will need to be attractive as a remuneration for taking up the crap mess that was left behind by previous ceo, but i think a 30% rise would be more than enough, not 100%.. and it' s not just his efforts.. there are many smrt staff & their management that help to execute the improvements.. so why arent these employees getting comparable pay rise as well lol.. one of the reasons why rich are getting richer is due to such cases..

When all the mess started showing up after the major breakdown, even a COI was deemed necessary to root out the cause/es n recommend solution/s.  LTA itself had to play a big role to help set things right.  Govt had to also ' dirty' its hands to put in more buses, take over bus-route management, etc, to help improve bus scheduling n overall quality of bus service.    On top of all these, a  new bus contracting model has to be put in place.  Yes, the CEO may have played a big role, a leadership role,  in improving the situation.  But was it an earth-shaking or pivotal role that justifies the jaw-dropping increase in salary?  Don' t understand the philosophy behind the reward system for  some big public-service providers which are actually monopolies  where evolution of mkt-driven competitive benchmarks remains something we cld do with.

Wonder why social media doesnt make a big hoo-ha out of this outrageous pay package. Very strange. Thre previous auntie CEO Saw was given bad press for many many days for frequent train breakdown and the media said she is overpaid. Has the colonel really done a better job that makes him deserve so much?  Trains have been breaking down as frequent as during auntie CEO days!      |

saw today newspaper saying that the smrt ceo pay got double, from annual  1+ mil to 2+mil pay.. so now we know where our increased fare price money goes to despite falling oil price haha.. makes me wonder why their ceo got 100% pay rise in a year, while most of the employees everywhere in singapore only have few % pay rise.. do these employees not contribute to the company? |
