After so many months now come the contracts. But looking closer, the bigger of the 2 vessel is from its own subsidiary Macro Polo, which Nam Cheong own a stake. So effectively, from external customers, it is only 1 vessel.

I posted the Vard chart on Vard forum... As for Nam Cheong, the downward trend is still intact... so long NC continue pay dividend to its shareholders, and so long the oil price strengthened, and so long it' s continue making profit, the share price will go back up again eventually... |

Yep, it was probably already in trouble when the previous owners sold it.    Noted that they also  made a high payout prior to selling out.  Why?    Believe the present owners have been doing their best to steady the ship.  Not easy though.  Seems a number of booby traps in South America.  Appears too that KC n SembM  might be feeling the heat too.

The problem with Vard is not because the current low oil price, but more because it has suffered, and still suffering from the long-term downward trend which is started since March 2012...

Vard makes mostly deep water OSV while Nam Cheong makes mostly shallow water OSV. The markets they serve are rather different. As you can see, the deepwater segment is very badly hit by the current oil prices as compared to the shallow water segment. During the cyclical recovery, deepwater will also recover later compared to shallow water. There' s nothing wrong with subcontracting the building to Chinese yards, provided they can control the quality. There are companies that have successfully engaged or even opened Chinese factories, and there are also many companies that tried and failed and lost all their investments in China. One has to analyse his position in the value chain and focus on executing his value proposition to the best of his abilities. No point competing against the Chinese on cost. Not when you' re operating from Malaysia. Isn' t it better to outsource the simple processes to Chinese yards, let them fight each other on pricing in order to get your order, and in return, you lower your costs while freeing up your resources since they provide such good financing terms? More importantly, I won' t be held ransom by them because I have the expertise and facilities to build my own vessels, plus I have a BTS model that have ready stock in case they fail to deliver.

Believe yards in the PRC had enbarked on building rigs for a few yrs now. Seems also that when the Chinese start on something they push all the way. Soon, Keppel n SembMarine will no longer have that competitive edge. For NC, because they have subcontracted their vessel construction to lower cost yards, it may even give them an edge over coys like Vard. Having own knowhow, facilities n manpower do bring with them their own set of problems. Look at how  Vard has been struggling for last three, four yrs  n  yet stil seems not to have  the light at the end of the tunnel.
