Norway' s Food Safety Authority  (NFSA)  There is  no reason to assume that the  environmental  pollutant  has any impact on food safety, 

Farmed fish usually contain more contaminants. Farmed fish are fed processed pellets,

The fact is the future of wild fish is getting brighter and brighter.  I must applaud you for your effort in collecting rubbish and post in this thread. Insignificant news also can juice it up. Not bad ...  huh

The contamination could have come from other fish sources and not necessary all aquacultural fishes must be  contaminated and wild catches are clean and healthy.

The contamination found does indicate the weakness of  the quality control in  Peruvian fishmeal production.    HCB  exists in many forms and can be easily detected by medical test.

We are not confuse, you need to understand fishmeal come from 2 sources Farmed Fish or " Organic or Wild" Fish. 

That is the reason why NFSA has said " There is no reason to assume that the environmental pollutant  has  any impact on food safety, said NFSA."

Rather it is from Farmed Fish
  • Contamination:      Farmed fish usually contain more contaminants. Farmed fish are fed processed pellets, often made from processed anchovies, sardines and other small fish. Unfortunately, the types of fish used to make the pellets are usually caught in the polluted waters closer to shore and are often contaminated with industrial chemicals. As a result, farmed fish tends to have much higher levels of chemical contaminants that may cause cancer, memory problems, and neurobehavioral changes in children. Farmed salmon, for example, has been found to contain seven times more PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), dioxins and pesticides than wild salmon. Consumers can reduce the amount of contaminants in farmed salmon by almost half by grilling or broiling it so that the juices drip off, cooking it until the internal temperature reaches 175 degrees Fahrenheit and removing the skin before eating.
  • Antibiotics:      Besides being prone to industrial contamination, farmed fish are more subject to disease, which spreads quickly throughout the entire pen. Sick fish can escape into surrounding open water and spread disease to wild fish populations. To control disease, farmed fish are often given antibiotics to prevent the whole group from becoming ill. Research has shown that farmed salmon, for example, are administered more antibiotics by weight than any other type of livestock.

Dun confuse.  Nothing to do with the fish but the fishmeal.  It is the process or the fish source that have been containminated.  It will affect share price if Copeinca is involved

  • Lower Omega-3' s: While farmed fish    can  be fed an enhanced diet to increase its Omega-3' s, there is no way for consumers to know whether one piece of fish contains more healthy fats than another.  According to  research in    The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,    farmed salmon contains two or three times  fewer Omega-3' s even though it contains more  overall fat than wild salmon due to its grain-based diet.  The same is is true for other popular farmed fish, such as catfish and tilapia.


Wild-Caught fish
Wild fish, in contrast to farmed, live in open waters and eat a natural diet. Fishermen catch wild fish on open waters, their natural habitat.

Pros of Wild Fish
  • Flavor:    Many people prefer the taste of wild fish.  Farmed fish do not have as much room to move as their wild counterparts, which reduces the amount of muscle they can develop and affects  texture and taste.
  • Appearance:    Wild salmon is naturally bright in color due to its food source  (krill and other small sea creatures), while farmed salmon is grayish in color and dyes must be added to bring the flesh to an appealing shade.
  • Nutrition:    Wild fish are usually healthier (higher in Omega-3s) and less contaminated than farmed fish.

Norway finds toxin in fishmeal from one Peruvian supplier

Norway&rsquo s Food Safety Authority (NFSA) has found high  levels of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in  fishmeal from one Peruvian supplier, which is used by the feed producers  Skretting, Ewos and Biomar  for farmed fish in Norway.


There is no reason to assume that the environmental pollutant  has  any impact on food safety, said NFSA.

The authority said it is following up with fish feed producers to shed light on the situation and ensure that adequate measures are being taken, said Ole Fjetland, assistant supervisory director at NFSA.

The high HCB levels were found in some of the meal used by Skretting, the fish feed arm of Nutreco. Although the meal is used for feed, analysis of the feed showed that the HCB levels were below the accepted limit.

Feed producers Ewos and Biomar also source from the same Peruvian producer, said NFSA, and samples from their meal also showed levels above the limit, although the levels in the feed was here again below the limit.

The producers informed NFSA they have introduced extraordinary measures to avoid the use of products with high HCB levels.

The reason for the HCB&rsquo s presence has not been established, but the feed producers are in contact with the fishmeal producer to find out the source.

Fjetland said no higher levels of HCB has been found in finished products such as salmon fillets. &ldquo From what we know today, there is no reason to think this has any significance for food safety,&rdquo he said. &ldquo Out of precaution, we will take samples from fish that have eaten the feed where this meal has been used.&rdquo

It is quite silly for anyone to short this counter as well because it has very little trading done due to limited float unless one knows beforehand that the BBs are shorting it due to someone defaulting the margin trade.    On the other hand, it is unlikely that this counter will take off due to very heavy debt   if any,  it will be just a blip unless there is a terribly good news.

By R.M Nº 231-2014-PRODUCE, dated July 3rd, published in our official gazet yesterday, the Ministry of Production, suspended the fishing activities of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) for a period of 5 days due to high incidence of juveniles :

-From 0:00 hours July 5 to 9th, 2014

-Between 10° 30&rsquo ( Bermejo / Huarmey ) &ndash 10° 59&rsquo ( Supe ) LS. And

-Between 13° 30&rsquo ( Tambo De Mora ) &ndash 13° 59&rsquo ( Salinas De Otuma / Pisco ) LS.

Within 20 miles off the coast.

If CF is to rally,  the BB is likely to test the support at 0.325 and they will accummulate if the support could stay.  Only if there are good news,  such as CF can reduce it debts through substainable earnings will CF rally from the present level.. let see what CF' s earning report will be this or next week

Peru says El Nino threat over, waters cooling and fish returning

LIMA, July 4 (Reuters) - The worst of the potentially disastrous weather pattern El Nino is now behind Peru and cooling sea temperatures are luring back schools of anchovy, the key ingredient in fishmeal, authorities said on Friday.

Temperatures in Peru' s Pacific peaked in June, rising 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) above average levels, but have since retreated and will likely return to normal by August, the state committee that studies El Nino said.

" The possibility of us seeing an extraordinary Nino is ruled out," said German Vasquez, the head of the committee.

Peru is the world' s top fishmeal exporter, producing about a third of worldwide supply. The industry is concentrated along the South American country' s northern and central coast.

Cold-water anchovy that swam south to escape warmer sea temperatures that arrived in April are making their way back now, Vasquez said.
