SIA Engineering, France&rsquo s Safran in US$118 million JV for aircraft engine maintenance in Singapore The two will establish a full-fledged shop for maintenance of CFM Leap aircraft engines [SINGAPORE] SIA Engineering Company : S59 0% (SIAEC) has partnered French aerospace giant Safran Aircraft Engines in a US$118 million joint venture (JV) to set up a full-fledged aircraft engine shop in Singapore. This will provide maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for CFM Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion (Leap) engines, the engineering arm of Singapore Airlines said in a bourse filing on Saturday (Jun 6). Safran will hold a 51 per cent equity stake in the JV, while SIAEC will own the remaining 49 per cent. Currently, SIAEC performs quick-turn maintenance for Safran&rsquo s Leap engines at its Aircraft Engine Services facility in Changi North. These operations will be folded into the new JV, &ldquo forming the foundation for a future state-of-the-art engine MRO facility&rdquo , said SIAEC. The new facility will increase engine servicing capacity and broaden the range of maintenance services available for Leap-1A and Leap-1B engines, said SIAEC. These engines power the Airbus A320 neo family and Boeing 737 Max aircraft. Financial effects Of the estimated US$118 million in investment, SIAEC will contribute up to US$57.8 million  &ndash including US$13.7 million in in-kind contributions &ndash and Safran up to US$60.2 million. Further capital injection can be made in one or more tranches. If SIAEC had made the total contribution of US$57.8 million on Mar 31, its consolidated earnings per share would have increased by around 6.5 per cent to S$0.1608, said the group. Meanwhile, the group&rsquo s consolidated net asset value per share would have risen 0.6 per cent to S$1.579. Wong Yue Jeen, SIAEC chief commercial officer, said the JV builds on the group&rsquo s Leap 10-year engine maintenance services agreement with Safran, signed in 2019, to provide engine maintenance services to the French manufacturer.  It also combines Safran&rsquo s original equipment manufacturer expertise with SIAEC&rsquo s &ldquo MRO excellence&rdquo , Wong noted. This will help meet growing demand for Leap engine servicing in the Asia-Pacific region, added Safran executive vice-president of support and services Nicolas Potier. Shares of SIAEC closed flat at S$3.18 on Friday, before the announcement. |

The signs are there.   Near 52 weeks low,   double bottom,   a bullish reversal harami,   divergences in CCI and RSI,   a sterling result except for the increase in expenditures due to setting up of new centres in Malaysia and Philippines and a confirmation of higher high candlestick except for a high volume break up which might have come late due to heavier short sellings in the last few weeks.

SIA Engineering opens base maintenance facility in Subang sees &lsquo strong potential&rsquo in Malaysian aerospace sector
The two-hangar facility will supplement hangars in Singapore and the Philippines to support MRO works
[SINGAPORE]   SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC)   : S59 +0.32% on Friday (May 22) announced the opening of a base maintenance facility in Subang, Malaysia, which will form part of its regional base maintenance network.

Base Maintenance Malaysia (BMM), wholly owned by SIAEC, will provide additional capacity to supplement hangars in Singapore and the Philippines.

This will support both widebody and narrowbody aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of current and next-generation aircraft across Asia-Pacific and beyond, said SIAEC.

Located at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, the two-hangar facility can accommodate up to six concurrent aircraft checks. It enhances SIAEC&rsquo s operating resilience, while providing customers with greater flexibility in meeting their MRO requirements, said the group.

SIAEC added that BMM obtained the necessary regulatory approvals for the first of its two hangars and had performed its first A350 aircraft check in November 2025.

It said that the opening of BMM reflects its confidence in Malaysia as an &ldquo important aerospace location&rdquo , with Subang, in particular, continuing to play a &ldquo key role&rdquo in Malaysia&rsquo s aviation and aerospace ecosystem.

The group added that Malaysia offers a &ldquo strong aviation heritage, strategic location, established infrastructure and a growing pool of skilled aerospace talent&rdquo .

&ldquo The establishment of BMM supports the continued development of Malaysia&rsquo s aerospace ecosystem by creating skilled employment, developing local technical capability and providing career pathways for aircraft technicians, licensed aircraft engineers, maintenance planners, and quality and safety professionals,&rdquo said SIAEC.

It added that it will continue to support BMM by sharing technical expertise, operational experience, governance, training, systems and customer support.

Chin Yau Seng, CEO of SIAEC, noted that Malaysia&rsquo s aerospace sector has &ldquo strong potential&rdquo , particularly in talent development, technical capability and long-term industry growth.

This makes BMM a &ldquo strategic investment for SIAEC to drive sustainable long-term growth&rdquo , he said.

&ldquo Together with SIAEC&rsquo s three other joint venture companies in Malaysia, comprising Asia Pacific Aircraft Component Services, Eaton Aero Services and Pos Aviation Engineering Services, BMM enhances our ability to support customers and provides an important platform for us to grow our presence in Malaysia,&rdquo he added.

SIA Engineering expects &lsquo moderate&rsquo impact from Middle East war &ndash for now Base maintenance demand is &lsquo still strong&rsquo , with the group getting more enquiries about slot availability [SINGAPORE] SIA Engineering : S59 +3.14% is not spared from rising electricity cost and diesel prices, but the impact will be muted to a &ldquo large extent&rdquo given the size of the business, said CEO Chin Yau Seng at an earnings briefing on Tuesday (May 12). Carriers cutting back flights &ndash as a result of rocketed jet fuel prices or fuel shortages &ndash is also a minus for the group&rsquo s line maintenance business, he noted. However, the group is looking at passing on costs to airline customers to mitigate cost pressures where possible, such as at upcoming contract renewals. Base maintenance demand is &ldquo still strong&rdquo as slots for heavy checks are fixed. In fact, the listed maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) arm of Singapore Airlines is getting more enquiries about slot availability. As for supply chain disruptions arising from the Middle East war, SIA Engineering has not been affected much, but it has trebled its stock of petroleum-based consumables. The overall impact, Chin added, is therefore &ldquo moderate&rdquo for the near term. Jet fuel, electricity and diesel prices have spiked amid a shortage of crude oil supply from the Middle East. After the US and Israel launched attacks on Feb 28, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which 20 per cent of global oil supply normally flows. SIA Engineering is looking out for opportunities from the crisis, such as airlines that are serviced by Middle East providers. DBS Group Research said in a Tuesday report that it is bullish about SIA Engineering&rsquo s earnings outlook. Analyst Jason Sum said that the view is supported by the group&rsquo s resilient Asia-Pacific traffic, limited direct exposure to Middle Eastern airline MRO disruption, as well as visible capacity and capability expansion across its subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures. The group posted a 20.9 per cent year-on-year rise in net profit to S$85.6 million for the six months ended Mar 31, on the back of a 3.7 per cent increase in revenue to S$693.9 million. Basic earnings per share for the period came in at S$0.0764, up from S$0.0633 for the year-ago period. Net asset value per share rose marginally to S$1.569 as at Mar 31, from S$1.539 a year earlier. For the full year, SIA Engineering&rsquo s earnings improved 21 per cent year on year to S$168.9 million, with revenue up 14.3 per cent at S$1.4 billion. Group expenditure increased 13.2 per cent, mainly from set-up costs for two new subsidiaries in Malaysia and Cambodia, and higher costs for manpower, material, outhouse repair and IT system implementation. Chin said that the set-up cost for its Subang subsidiary in Malaysia peaked as the second hangar was delayed. Meanwhile, Singapore Aero Engine Services (SAESL) &ndash the group&rsquo s joint venture with aircraft engine manufacture Rolls-Royce &ndash is expected to see its gestational losses peak this financial year. &ldquo But we believe it&rsquo s for good reason,&rdquo said Chin. &ldquo It&rsquo s to grow the capacity with a lot of demand out there.&rdquo He added that SAESL&rsquo s expansion is &ldquo not just for increasing throughput, but also being able to get to advanced repair&rdquo . Shares of SIA Engineering rose 3.1 per cent or S$0.10 to close at S$3.28 on Tuesday. |
