The US has built up its naval presence in the Middle East after President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened Iran with intervention if it did not agree to a nuclear deal or failed to stop killing protesters. |

US warns Iran before two-day naval exercise in Strait of HormuzThe United States has warned Iran&rsquo s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it &ldquo will not tolerate unsafe&rdquo actions in the Strait of Hormuz, after Tehran announced a two-day live-fire naval exercise there. The US military will not tolerate &ldquo unsafe&rdquo manoeuvres such as flights over US warships, including the approach of Iranian speedboats on a collision course with US ships, said CENTCOM, the regional command responsible for the Middle East. &ldquo Any unsafe and unprofessional behavior near US forces, regional partners or commercial vessels increases risks of collision, escalation, and destabilization,&rdquo CENTCOM added. &ldquo The U.S. military has the most highly trained and lethal force in the world and will continue to operate with the highest levels of professionalism and adhere to international norms. Iran&rsquo s IRGC must do the same,&rdquo the command added. The exercise planned by the Iranians and set to begin on Sunday, during which live ammunition is to be fired, must not impair freedom of navigation and international commercial shipping in the important strait, the US military demanded. |
