SIA Group flies 28.2% more passengers in February Sats makes acquisition in Sweden
FLAG carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) : C6L -0.62% carried 3.1 million passengers on a group level in February, up 28.2 per cent from a year ago, it said in its operating results filed to the bourse on Friday (Mar 15).

Passenger traffic for the group was up 20.4 per cent from a year ago. The growth in passenger traffic was in line with its capacity increase of 20.7 per cent over the same period, added the carrier.

Passenger demand was boosted by the Chinese New Year holiday season across Asia, said the group.

Meanwhile, group passenger load factor stood at 86.3 per cent, with SIA and its low-cost airline arm Scoot posting monthly passenger load factors of 84.5 per cent and 92.6 per cent, respectively.

Stronger e-commerce flows also boosted SIA&rsquo s cargo carriage to 432.3 million tonne-km, a year-on-year increase of 12.9 per cent.

This outpaced the capacity expansion of 7.4 per cent from a year before, said the group.

As at end-February, the group&rsquo s passenger network covered 121 destinations in 35 countries and territories. SIA served 76 destinations, while Scoot served 67 destinations. Its cargo network comprised 126 destinations in 37 countries and territories.

Separately, in-flight caterer and ground handler Sats announced on Friday its plans to acquire an air cargo handler and border inspection business in Sweden through its wholly owned subsidiary, WFS Sweden, for 94 million Swedish kronor (S$12.2 million).

The group said in a bourse filing that it had entered into a sale-and-purchase agreement with Ola Elfstrom Aktiebolag to acquire Terminal & Transporttjanst i Sigtuna (TT) and APH Logistics (APH).

Both TT and APH are incorporated in Sweden and operate out of the country&rsquo s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda.

TT provides cargo handling and cargo transportation services to airlines, freight forwarders and time-critical medical suppliers.

APH specialises in border inspection services with perishable and cold chain facilities. APH&rsquo s services complement the air cargo services provided by TT.

&ldquo This move will strengthen the group&rsquo s presence in the Stockholm market and our specialised cargo handling capability, as well as add new capacity for growth,&rdquo said the group.

The proposed acquisitions will be funded through Sats&rsquo internal resources, and the purchase consideration will be paid in cash.

The book value of the acquisitions, based on unaudited management accounts as at December 2023, is approximately five million Swedish kronor. The net tangible asset value is about 3.9 million Swedish kronor.

The acquisitions are not expected to have any material impact on the company&rsquo s net tangible assets per share and consolidated earnings per share for the current financial year, said the group.

who is the caterer for SIA? SATS?   SINGAPORE - Passengers who fly in premium economy on Singapore Airlines (SIA) can look forward to a greater variety of meal choices and larger portions from March 31, when the airline rolls out a revamp of the cabin class. As part of the revamp, SIA has expanded the food and beverages menu to a total of 175 main courses, 48 appetisers, and 34 desserts. These are either brand new dishes or existing ones that have undergone significant changes. An example of a dish that has been tweaked is the nasi lemak ayam rendang, a Malay rice dish served with slow-cooked chicken in coconut milk with spices. Its previous rendition was nasi lemak which featured fried chicken. |

SIA prices US$500 million notes due 2034 at 5.296% yield
SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) : C6L -0.47% has priced US$500 million of 10-year, 5.25 per cent bonds at a re-offer price of 99.646 per cent of their nominal value to yield 5.296 per cent.

The fixed-rate notes will bear a coupon of 5.25 per cent per annum until their maturity on Mar 21, 2034, said DBS on Thursday (Mar 14). The coupon will be paid semi-annually.

DBS and Citigroup are joint global coordinators for the bond. They are also the joint bookrunners with HSBC and JPMorgan.

The yield for the bonds represents a spread of 110 basis points over 10-year US Treasuries, which were yielding 4.196 per cent.

Net proceeds from the proposed issue will be used for aircraft purchases, aircraft-related payments, as well as for general corporate or working capital purposes. This includes refinancing existing borrowings of SIA, said DBS.

SIA will issue the notes under its multicurrency medium-term note programme.

SIA&rsquo s latest issuance comes as the flag carrier is set to redeem its S$750 million in outstanding 3.03 per cent bonds on the maturity date of Mar 28.

Changi Airport' s February passenger movements surpass pre-Covid level China again top source of tourists Singapore' s Changi Airport passenger numbers surpass pre-COVID levels for the first time in February 2024 CHANGI Airport passenger movements came in at around 5.3 million in February, 4.3 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels for the month, statistics from Changi Airport Group (CAG) released on Wednesday (Mar 13) showed. This was the first time that the airport' s monthly passenger traffic was higher than in the corresponding month before the pandemic. The February passenger traffic was also 33.7 per cent higher than that in the same month last year. In January, Changi Airport logged 5.4 million passenger movements, up 24.3 per cent year on year, but still 4 per cent lower than pre-pandemic. For the whole of 2023, Changi Airport handled 58.9 million passengers, down from 68.3 million passengers pre-pandemic. Air-freight movements were also up in February, compared to the pre-pandemic period. There were 143,000 tonnes of air freight handled that month, higher than the pre-pandemic corresponding month by 4.8 per cent. Changi Airport-s published data does not show the breakdown of monthly freight movements for the past years. It is therefore unclear whether the airport had higher freight movements in a particular month when borders were closed and e-commerce boomed, than pre-pandemic. Singapore welcomed 1.44 million travellers in February, up 50 per cent year on year, said the Singapore Tourism Board. Last month, mainland Chinese travellers reclaimed their position as Singapore' s top source market for tourists. There were 326,970 arrivals, 825.9 per cent higher than in the year before. Indonesia took second place with 190,760 arrivals (21.9 per cent higher year on year) Malaysia, with 100,200 arrivals (up 13.8 per cent year on year) was third. Singapore Airlines (SIA) : C6L -0.16% and its budget arm Scoot operate flights to and from 27 airports in mainland China. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium for February put Scoot' s seat share for non-stop flights from China to Singapore at 25.9 per cent SIA' s seat share for these flights was 21.3 per cent. Ranking behind both airlines was China Eastern Airlines, which had 15.2 per cent of seat share for February, noted Alton Aviation Consultancy managing director Mabel Kwan, who drew on Cirium' s data. SIA and Scoot do not have overlapping routes, except for the Guangzhou-to-Singapore leg. SIA is more focused on flights from seven major business cities these include Beijing and Shanghai, where it offers a lot more capacity through higher frequencies and with wide-body aircraft, Kwan noted. Scoot serves secondary cities with lower frequency, and uses narrow-body aircraft.
