The $5/day for Jan is new though but only $5. Sad to day, these subsidies will not be able to save the taxi trade and are not meant for this purpose anyway. Taxi companies earn from the taxi drivers, not the passengers. This is precisely the problem confronting the taxi companies now. Zoom Bee lost on the average 1,000 drivers per year for the last 9 years, from 16,000 to the present 8,000. My prediction is that the attrition will continue slowly but surely. The speed of attrition will depend on the ages of the existing drivers and whether they are willing to be re-trained to switch jobs. The Security line is currently a pull factor as I know it. Meantime, the taxi companies are now playing a zero sum game among themselves, some are growing while some shrinking. Perhaps in 3 years, we will see only Zoom Bee, Transcab and Stride (former SMRT Taxis) in the scene.

They will receive a $10 payout per vehicle per day in December, and a $5 payout per vehicle per day in January. This supersedes the $5 payout per vehicle per day in December that was announced previously. This extension is expected to benefit about 50,000 drivers. On top of the Government&rsquo s assistance, taxi operators have pledged to continue rental waivers for drivers. In a separate statement on Saturday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that as per earlier tranches of relief payments, there is no need for drivers to make an application to receive the payouts.  Drivers who are currently receiving relief payouts will automatically receive the extended payouts through their operators. I can see many here and you are one of them We all know that no MRT operators can make money with only income from the fares even during the best years when people had to stand in the train barely an inch from one another. But as our loving PM said, there is no way that we can return to the pre- Pandemic times. Under the Bus Contracting Model, operators suvive with life-lines from the gov supplying them with tax payers' money. Profit is guaranteed by contracts hence it has nothing to do with the Pandemic. The real threat comes from public opinion which can turn against the idea of paying too much tax money to allow it to throw 2 big dividend parties a year, at SBS level and at HQ level. Bus fares is due to go up immediately while there are already talks in town about GST hike next year. If SBS has to be delisted (like SMRT) or stop throwing dividend parties to satisfy the tax payers, it will have to. I will talk about Taxie tomorrow.
