Why Singtel is among OCBC, DBS analysts&rsquo top picks for 2021Singapore&rsquo s largest telecommunications provider is set to benefit from the anticipated economic recovery this year, say OCBC and DBS analysts.   Kelvin Ong  |  Financial writer,  Singapore  | Publication date:  Thursday 07 January 2021 16:32
Why did Singtel&rsquo s share price rise 4%?Singtel shares climbed as much as 4.4% to S$2.40 on Thursday (07 January 2021) following the US Democratic Party&rsquo s win in the Georgia Senate runoff elections. The group was also among the ten most active counters on the  Singapore Exchange  (SGX) on the day, experiencing a trade volume of over 43 million. The Democrats&rsquo win on Wednesday (06 January), which solidified the party&rsquo s control of the Congress and President-elect Joe Biden&rsquo s legislative agenda, helped to boost stock markets across Asia in early trading. The Straits Times Index, Singapore&rsquo s blue-chip benchmark, was up some 1.56% to 2,907 as at 14:25 SGT. What are analysts&rsquo latest views on Singtel? In terms of share price outlook, the Singtel stock has an average rating of &lsquo outperform&rsquo and 12-month target price of S$2.925, according to SGX StockFacts. The average target price represents an upside of 21.9% from the last traded price. The latest rating came from OCBC&rsquo s head of research Carmen Lee on 17 December 2020. She named Singtel as one of &lsquo preferred stock picks&rsquo , giving the stock a target price of S$2.85 a share. In her report, Lee posited that the recovery theme will be a key focus in 2021, with Singapore having entered Phase 3 on 28 December 2020 and favourable vaccine news lifting market optimism. However, while selective growth stocks (such as US tech) continue to have potential, she believes that Singapore&rsquo s cyclical-heavy stocks - including Singtel - are well positioned to benefit from the recovery theme, and &lsquo also to narrow the gap between growth and value stocks in the months ahead as economic activities resume gradually&rsquo . Meanwhile, DBS analyst Sachin Mittal reiterated a &lsquo buy&rsquo rating and target price of S$2.75 on 11 December 2020, calling the stock a &lsquo top pick&rsquo . Mittal anticipates that Singtel will achieve a 17.2% year-on-year earnings per share in 2021, while also resuming earnings growth in the next three financial years (FY2021 to FY2023) after a four-year gap. In light of that, he expects Singtel, which has been paying out almost 100% of its free cash flow as dividends to its shareholders in recent years, to offer a dividend yield of 4.8%.

Just got all SG Stocks' short positions data. Currently this data show about 77M short positions shares of Singtel. It did not include yesterday and today' s unwinding or short selling. 78M shares covering can translate to 39 cents potential upside assuming average 2k lots sell Q for each forwarding price. I am helpful to share such transparent information with you in SJ here. Singtel still remain 2nd ranking heaviest shorting positions after SPH while Comfortdelgro is now the last ranking at about 300K short positions (shares) where CDG surged from about 1.2x to 1.78x in Nov 2020 due to almost all coverings. Good news that there are some institutional funds flow today according to some analysts' top pick calls including OCBC, DBS, MBKE, UOBkay. Possibly, 77M shares shorts covering plus future institutional buy can be double power to surge forward! |

Most traders in here are not pouring in money solely based on DBL.  We have discuss about DBL for the longest time and we have already came with a conclusion that we will not be expecting anything for the first 3 years.  If there is any profits to be seen, it will be from 4th year onwards. Singtel' s business is pretty diversified. Knowing they are part Government owned, they won' t be putting all their eggs in one basket.  Wise Investor have already made a point about it. Maybe if you scoll down the super long thread, you will see somelight at th end of the tunnel.

You missed my posting that Singtel will surely be Up based on my broker's information about analyst's top pick today.
Focus on telecommunication which will be back to pre-Covid-19 level by this year as a green shot.

One should be sceptical of the potential for the digital bank initiative to significantly boost its bottom line and share price. No doubt the new operations will succeed/survive, but I see it as a costly affair and quite unlikely to translate to significant profits to the extent of multiplying the share price. For the start, the digital bank' s focus will likely be on mass retail market, which generates less profit margin than private banking and/large institution transactions. Banks make most of their money/growth from being middleman to large deals and players, not from hauling deposits and performing micro retail transactions. It is also challenging for the digital bank to move into these segments. Premium/private segment customers would generally prefer more personalised face-to face services, rather than engaging with a online/app platform. While online, the digital banking operations will likely be restricted to Singapore. This may not meet the demands of large or fast-growing businesses/ high net worth individuals that need onsite support for their overseas operations (UOB,DBS, OCBC have overseas subsidiaries and branches). Hence, the digital bank will likely have to content with simple financial products and small players, which is not going to generate substantial margins. To make such endeavour more competitive, the retail segment in Singapore is already saturated with the presence of the large established banks. It is likely that the digital bank has to burn plenty of cash / discount to attract mass retail customers from the large banks in Singapore. While this incentive spamming strategy did work for the taxi market, one should note that the banking industry is highly regulated with lots of capital/liquidity/marketing restrictions and it will not be easy to do so against the larger and better capitalised players over a long term.  Let us not forget that the large banks are already advancing their own digital banking.  Moreover, the R& D and development of such digital platform will be costly to build from scratch without pre-existing confidential banking/customer data, which are already afforded by the large banking players. Overall, my thoughts are that you should be cautious pouring your money into the shares on the sole basis of its new digital banking venture. Best to seek advice from real banking managers in this space (I am not and I hope someone can correct me). |

A few tips which I can let you know is start small with your own savings. Work your way up. Rome was not build in a day. Never take any kinds of loans to buy stocks - be it from friends, family or Ah Long. Invest within your capabilities Never never be greedy. Don' t swallow 20 hard boil eggs when your mouth can only handle 2 the most. This is probably the most important factor in any investment. If you have the means to pay off your HDB using your CPF with your wife, clear it if it' s less than 5 years left. One loan less, it' s one less headache. The less you owe, the more you gain.
