heard sia already hedged at 60 to 65/- for 2 years,  money making on the way, no way sia would not hedge when price was low. when they hedged at above 100/- per barrel, they cut loss of more than a billion i think, now making all the money back, it wont matter if price shoots up 120/- since a war is always likely to last few weeks and not years hold if could yet, reopening is fierce with F1, more foreigners coming into spore via Singapore Airlines

SIA will soar this year and beyond as the pandemic is coming to an end. Look at global airlines, most of all have soared. Huge pending demand for traveling. Everybody is just waiting for WHO to declare pandemic over and all the SDM being removed, including testing. |

Singapore Airlines should disclose impact of sustainable fuel adoption
ALL Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot flights out of Changi Airport will use a blend of refined jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel in a 1-year trial beginning in the third quarter this year.

Sustainable aviation fuel refers to non-conventional (fossil-derived) fuel. The physical and chemical characteristics of the fuel are almost identical to those of conventional jet fuel, and therefore these 2 types of fuel can be safely mixed, according to the International Air Transport Association.

The blended fuel also can use the same supply infrastructure and does not require aircraft or engines to be modified.

Singapore' s national carrier will use a mix of conventional jet fuel and sustainable fuel made from used cooking oil and waste animal fats. The change is expected to result in a 2,500-tonne reduction of carbon dioxide emissions over the duration of the pilot.

SIA said the use of sustainable fuels is a key lever to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 - a pledge by the global aviation industry. The company is also tapping other levers, including operational efficiency and a fuel-efficient fleet.

The adoption of sustainable fuels is a necessary move, not just by SIA but by airlines globally.

Before the pandemic led to the grounding of much of the global aircraft fleet, the sector accounted for about 2.4 per cent of global carbon emissions.

Investors increasingly will not tolerate management and boards that do not make an effort to reduce their carbon footprints.

There are, nevertheless, downsides to green awareness.

While sustainable fuels can cut emissions by up to 80 per cent compared with fossil jet fuel on a life-cycle basis, they are at least twice and could be as much as 8 times more expensive.

Fuel is already the single-largest operating expense for most airlines, accounting for 20-30 per cent of total costs.

Investors may naturally be concerned that costs will rise on the back of higher use of sustainable fuels.

A higher cost base at this time, when the industry has yet to recover from the devastating impact of the pandemic, could be hard to stomach.

Strong commitment

This column is not arguing that SIA should halt or roll back its commitment to net-zero.

Rather, given the increasing emphasis on environmental, sustainability and governance factors by institutional investors, SIA should quicken the deployment of such sustainable fuels so that production can be scaled up and costs brought down.

Indeed, that is one of its objectives by partnering with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and state investor Temasek to raise the take-up of sustainable aviation fuels in the Republic.

The national airline demonstrated its strong commitment to the acceleration of the development, production, and consumption of sustainable aviation fuel when it signed a declaration alongside planemaker Airbus, engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and aviation technology player Safran at the Singapore Airshow.

At the same time, SIA should prep investors for the cost of its adoption.

Air France started to charge a biofuel fee for air tickets from January, to offset the cost of using sustainable aviation fuel.

A new law in France requires airlines refuelling in the country to use at least 1 per cent sustainable fuel in their fuel mix.

As the world deepens its efforts to reduce emissions, other countries might soon impose a similar requirement or levy a carbon tax.

SIA could help investors by disclosing in its financial statements how the deployment of sustainable fuel would affect its bottom line, whether some of the costs could be passed on to passengers, and whether or not it benefits from any subsidies in adopting the fuel.

SIA announces 2 orders for GE9X engines and services, Airbus A350F freighters

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) has ordered 22 additional GE9X engines from GE Aviation to power its fleet of Boeing 777-9 aircraft for a total of US$2.8 billion, GE said. The agreement also includes a 12-year services contract for the jet engines.

In a press statement on Wednesday (Feb 16), GE said SIA initially ordered 40 GE9X engines from the engine supplier in 2017 and currently has a total of 31 Boeing 777-9 aircraft on order.

SIA is scheduled to be the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to operate the new generation widebody Boeing 777-9 aircraft.

In a separate press statement on Wednesday, SIA announced that it has also firmed up an order for 7 Airbus A350F freighters, with options for 5 more aircraft. This follows a letter of intent inked in December last year.

The A350Fs will replace SIA' s 7 Boeing 747-400F freighters. SIA said the deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, making SIA the first airline to operate this new-generation widebody freighter aircraft.

The range and payload of the A350F will provide SIA with greater flexibility in its freighter deployment, bolstering its cargo business and cementing its leading position in the sector, said the flag carrier.

The A350F deal with Airbus includes a swap with 15 A320neo and 2 A350-900 passenger aircraft in the SIA Group' s order book.

This, SIA said, will allow the company to manage its capital expenditure while continuing with its essential freighter renewal programme.

On the GE9X order, SIA' s senior vice-president, engineering, Lau Hwa Peng said that the " cutting-edge technologies" of the GE9X engine and Boeing 777-9 aircraft will help SIA to increase operating efficiencies, lower fuel burn and materially reduce its carbon emissions.

" This will reinforce SIA' s position as a leading global airline, and enable us to capture future growth opportunities," he added.

GE9X program general manager Mike Hoffmeister said the company is proud to continue its relationship with SIA, its longstanding customer.

SIA flights to Hong Kong suspended for 2 weeks after passengers test positive for Covid-1916 Feb 2022 23:23
[SINGAPORE] Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been banned from flying passengers to Hong Kong for 2 weeks, after Covid-19 cases were detected among some of its passengers. In response to queries from The Straits Times, an SIA spokesman said Wednesday (Feb 16): " The directive from the Hong Kong regulators came after some SIA customers, who had tested negative for Covid-19 for their pre-departure tests, subsequently tested positive on arrival in Hong Kong. |

SIA swaps passenger plane orders for freightersSingapore Airlines (SIA) will replace its fleet of Boeing 747-400F freighters with the newly launched, more fuel-efficient Airbus A350F freighter aircraft. The national carrier has finalised a purchase agreement with Airbus for 7 of the A350F freighter aircraft at the Singapore Airshow 2022, Airbus announced on Wednesday (Feb 16). This following a letter of intent inked in December 2021 with options for another 5 A350Fs. It added that the deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, making SIA the first airline to operate this new generation widebody freighter aircraft. The freighters, under the agreement, will be delivered in place of 15 A320neo and 2 A350-900 passenger aircraft that are in SIA' s order book. This allows the airline group to manage its capital expenditure, while continuing with the essential freighter renewal. The A350F can carry a similar volume of freight as the Boeing 747-400F, but burns up to 40 per cent less fuel and features a longer range. The renewal comes as the group reported a record cargo-flown revenue of over S$1.8 billion for the first half of financial year 2022 or up 51.2 per cent, amid capacity crunch in air and ocean freight. Cargo has cushioned the financial impact of the pandemic on SIA as air travel has been hit. Goh Choon Phong, SIA' s chief executive, said: " The pandemic has underscored the importance of investing in the cargo business, and bolstering the SIA Group' s diverse revenue streams. Air cargo also plays a vital role in keeping open global supply chains, especially to transport essential goods during these times." Freight operations registered a cargo load factor of 76 per cent in January 2022, 13.2 percentage points lower year on year, as capacity expansion outstripped that in loads, according to SIA' s operating statistics for the month and released on Tuesday. Load factor is the capacity utilised by shippers.   |
