BEIJING, March 28 (Reuters) - China' s top airlines have
reported losses for a fourth consecutive year as weak domestic
demand in the fourth quarter and a slow post-pandemic recovery
in overseas travel weighed on earnings, but analysts said the
outlook was improving this year.
Their performance, while better than in 2022, reflects how
slowly the Chinese aviation industry is emerging from the
COVID-19 pandemic, as international travel struggles to match a
recovery in domestic travel and consumers remain price-sensitive
amid the country' s slowing economy.
China lifted all pandemic-related international travel
restrictions at the start of 2023, one of the last countries to
do so. Data from flight tracking app Flight Master showed in
March the number of international flights to and from China was
at about 70% of pre-pandemic levels.
Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines 600115.SS on
Thursday posted an annual loss of 8.2 billion yuan ($1.13
billion), compared with a record loss of 37.4 billion yuan in
2022.
The country' s flagship carrier Air China 601111.SS on
Thursday reported a loss of 1.04 billion yuan in 2023,
significantly narrower than its 2022 loss of 38.6 billion yuan.
In the fourth quarter, it posted a loss of 1.8 billion yuan,
Reuters calculated, better than the 10.5 billion yuan loss in
the same period of 2022.
Another major state-owned carrier, Guangzhou-based China
Southern Airlines 600029.SS , reported an annual loss of 4.1
billion yuan on Wednesday, far smaller than the loss of 32.7
billion yuan in 2022. Its fourth-quarter loss of 5.4 billion
yuan compared to its 15.1 billion yuan loss for the period a
year earlier, Reuters calculated.
China Southern attributed its annual loss to weak consumer
spending power, jet fuel costs, supply chain problems and the
depreciation of the yuan.
Hopes are high the Chinese airline industry can turn a
corner this year. Brokerage Guotai Junan Securities said on
Monday that in January and February the percentage of seats
filled by small airlines had surpassed 2019 levels while that of
large carriers was also approaching pre-COVID levels.
China' s aviation regulator said in January it expected the
number of international flights to and from the country to reach
6,000 per week by the end of this year, or about 80% of
pre-COVID levels.
In 2023, the global airline industry returned to profit on
strong performances from carriers in North America, Europe and
the Middle East. Airline industry group IATA expects the
Asia-Pacific region to return to profit in 2024.

Don' t mind me saying .... the debts is much larger than the revenues and it is round the corner. Reading thru the analysts' comments " the counter is over-valued but due to low volatility ...can be a bull trap." I might be wrong ... err on the side of caution. Not vested  If trading maybe ... dyodd |

Q4 23/24 definely better than Q4 22/23, based on SIA Operating Results for Jan & Feb 2024 plus Taylor Swift' s March 2024 concerts in Singapore. The group' s net profit in the first nine months of FY 2023/24 has reached the level of the full-year net profit of the previous fiscal year. SIA 2023/24 full year net profit definitely reaches a new high. DYODD

DOW JONES Airline Index has recovered from SouthWest Airlines' price fall and went up more than 3% yesterday.  If it can break the trendline T1 as shown in the following chart,  it will want to test the last high @ about 200.  Likely SIA price will follow

Hi FATABA, you deserve the compliment, and thank you for the well wishes. I wish you well for the investment plan, and wish the shareholders here make some profit together too. If SIA Q4 23/24 does us proud or at least don' t fail us badly, we could envisage another spectacular FY 23/24 reporting by SIA and the media, just like they did in FY 22/23, hopefully. I read back those reports, it was wonderfully written, however, we need to move forward. Last FY board meeting with the media at the end of result day, SIA gave another year of good year, let hope this year has some good news on top of the ususal head wind risk or normalising year. You are right too, we need some knowledges and disciplines to buy and sell at the appropriate time, especially in this mightty short selling environment since last year. Once in the money and satisfy with our profit, better to exit, and relook for another entry, if there is. Estimate another 1.5 months to SIA FY reporting, we shall see. DYODD |

Thanks for your kind comments . I am also wrong sometimes.  SCI I got it correct and was satisfied w my profit :)) .,,, so I exit that counter . Higher or lower I am not very happy w the current SCI model . ( Kep is better in the sense that it is asset light and have large AUM recurring profit . ) but this is my personal view n investment plan.  For SIA , I am looking for a good Q4 for them which u rightly pointed out .  Longer term the China flight will still affect SIA , but let hope it is not long term . ( the real underlining issue will be unknown to us all )  SIA Scoot is also doing well .  Let see the coming full yr result and CEO update ....definately a better picture then  Good luck to you .  Dyodd

FATABA is another experience forum member that personally I am very keen to read on. In SCI counter, he quoted JPMorgan comments could easily move mountains, he had proven correct twice. Feb 24 is also Singapore Air Show that had attracts many delegations to visit Singapore, it will someway enhance Q4 23/24. At least to date SIA for 9M 23/24 had a net profit 35% more than 9M 22/23 result. Hopefully Q4 23/24 is at least equal to Q4 22/23 if not better. Q4 23/24 can only be at worst, make much lesser than Q4 22/23, it can' t be making a lost in Q4 23/24 unless bad with any black swan event, touch wood. Termination of China flights to date will only be in force from 1 April 24, it doesn' t affect Q4 23/24 in this situation. Yes, Let see, we keep our fingers cross. DYODD   |

personally I am expecting a great Qtr result for SIA .....due to CNY and the SWIFT effect..  already load factor is good for Feb .  SIA may surprise w a good dividend payout , and even terminate some of their loans earlier.  termination of some China flight may not be major issue  Extra long flights to Brussel etc is more than able to compensate for this shorter one .  Let see , keeping my fnger cross .  DYODD
