S. Korea braces itself for second virus wave

South Korea is bracing itself for an " inevitable" second wave of the coronavirus, even as the country eases social distancing amid a slowdown in new infections.

A new case of local infection - a 29-year-old man who went club-hopping - has already triggered alarm.

But health officials say they will be better placed to combat the virus the next time round, given their success in containing the outbreak so far.

Only four new cases were reported yesterday - a far cry from the peak of 909 on Feb 29 when mass testing was conducted on over 200,000 members of a religious group at the centre of the first local outbreak.

The total infection tally to date is 10,810, with 256 deaths and 1,135 people still undergoing treatment. The rest have recovered.

Health Ministry spokesman Son Young-rae said at an online briefing yesterday that a second wave is " inevitable" given the extent of the pandemic that originated in China.

There are now over 3.8 million confirmed cases all over the world, with the United States, Spain and Italy among the most severely hit.

Responding to a question on how prepared South Korea was for another outbreak, Mr Son said the country' s surveillance system and screening capability would be able to identify a potential spread linked to a confirmed case almost immediately.

He added that they would also be able to conduct contact tracing more effectively and block the spread of the virus. Only 5 per cent of confirmed cases came from unidentified sources, he noted.

" A second outbreak will be inevitable at some point, but it will not be like the first wave that saw an explosive surge," said Mr Son.

Tuesday marked the last day of a stringent six-week social distancing campaign that saw the closure of public facilities such as parks and libraries, and entertainment venues including cinemas and bars.

Concern is already rising over possible new clusters forming over the recent long weekend due to three back-to-back public holidays from April 30 to May 5, as hundreds of thousands of people travelled domestically.

It could take up to two weeks for cases to emerge, given the incubation period of the virus.

Health officials have constantly urged people to remain vigilant and abide by " everyday life quarantine rules" such as washing hands for 30 seconds and ventilating one' s home more than twice a day.

A case of local infection has already caused jitters.

A 29-year-old man from Yongin city, south-east of Seoul, who travelled from his home town with three friends on Thursday last week and then went club-hopping with one of them in Seoul last Friday, tested positive for the virus on Wednesday.

He was the only local infection among the four new cases announced yesterday, and the first in four days. The others were all imported cases.

The friend who went travelling and clubbing with him, a 31-year-old resident of Anyang city, has also tested positive, according to Anyang officials. Details will be announced only today.

The authorities said the 29-year-old man is believed to have come into contact with up to 2,000 people over the six-day break. Contact tracing is under way, and 43 of his colleagues have been tested.

Until a vaccine is developed, the coronavirus can keep reappearing, warned Mr Son of the Health Ministry. " The government is prepared to face a second wave. The key is how to contain the outbreak more efficiently while leading a normal life."

Thailand to expand testing for critical groups as new cases drop

BANGKOK &bull Thailand plans to expand coronavirus testing for critical groups as the number of new cases is dwindling into single digits and some business are reopening, a senior official said yesterday.

The government aims to reach a total of 400,000 tests from the current level of around 230,000, said Dr Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government' s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

" This is about 6,000 tests for every million individuals... and considered a moderate amount globally," Dr Taweesin said.

Thailand has a population of about 66.5 million and has recorded 2,992 infections since January, with a total of 55 deaths.

The criteria for testing will be expanded to include flu-like symptoms without a fever or the loss of the sense of smell, which will account for 85,000 new tests, he said.

There will also be additional testing for high-risk professions such as medical personnel, screening authorities, migrant workers, public transportation drivers and delivery workers - but not widespread random testing in the population.

" The theory of casting a wide net will not work, but this approach is effective," Dr Taweesin said.

The number of new cases in Thailand has been declining since last month and the authorities have said they will consider a second phase for the easing of restrictions, such as reopening businesses next week after allowing smaller businesses to open earlier this month.

It states clearly the certification & approval obtained so far & also state that it is not finger-prick test type & not meant for home use which thus, is not similar to the ones that that NUS-NUH expert mentioned in the Straits Time & what our Ah Gong has removed the ads & has sent warning letters to those bogus ones. In my very very Humble opinion, i think BIO and CB will rise as you can obviously tell the amount of testing is huge and the US reopening it states etc, along with other countries. The upside is so huge even medtech x15 profit, i humbly humbly think that CB & BIO will have 15x or even much much much more profit looking at their market penetration in the US, Europion union, and ASIA. As always do your own decision. In my humble humble opinion its quite Common sense i think

The whole world (including europe, asia and US) are going to need extensive testings before they can fully reopen economies.

Expect all testing companies to have blockbuster results this year and beyond - esp. since word is getting around that a vaccine could never be found.
