Just a few points for investors going forward: Focus less on the income statement, and look more at the cash flow statement. In the case of Hyflux, it may have reported profits from 2010-2016, but a quick check of the operating cash flows would show it had been burning cash over the same period Understand the accounting, or ask someone else who does. Again, for Hyflux, the accounting allows the company to recognise revenue over the construction period. During the construction period, the company does not receive any cash. It only starts to get cash when the concession period begins  Coupled with a period of aggressive expansion, the success of Hyflux was highly dependent on the company not making any mistakes. It was like someone driving with a knife at the wheel. No room for mistakes If you invest in something like perpetual securities, which have characteristics of both debt and equity, consider the reward (coupon) and whether it compensates you for the risk (risk of business failure and where you rank in the capital structure). Some may say I' m too focused on accounting and numbers. I agree. We should be more businesslike in our thinking.
