Share price of Creative Technology has skyrocketed 664% to $8.40 since it first announced that its all-new Super X-FI technology won the prestigious AVS Forum " Best of CES 2018 Award" on 17 Jan. 

Its maiden outing at the world' s largest consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, US was followed by a marketing blitz which has since culminated with a product demonstration in Singapore last week. 

The Product
At the product demonstration, Creative shared the result of a $100m R& D investment and what it termed as the " holy grail" of sound for headphones by turning ordinary headphones into surround-sound setups akin to a movie theatre. 

The Business Model
Creative intends to monetise the product in three ways:

The sound chip maker plans to share the technology for free by Jun with a mobile app, SXFi with the aim of attracting 50m users within the next two years. For comparison, Angry Birds achieved 36m downloads within the first year of release on the iPhone. The app' s performance will however only be limited to downloaded content. 

For the technology to work on streaming services such as Spotify, consumers will have to fork out US$150 for a SXFi dongle, which would be available in 3Q18. A best-in-class wireless headphone is then slated to enter the market in 4Q18, which would have a SXFi chip built in. 

Ultimately, Creative aims to leverage on wide consumer acceptance to make SFXi the de facto audio standard and license the technology to handphone and other audio product makers.

Execution Risks
Amid the flurry of excitement over Creative' s latest game-changer, investors should be aware that production of the SXFi chip and dongle assembly may not be that simple or easy as the supply of 6-8 inch fabs that does these kind of chips is very tight. 

Moreover, if Creative' s bigger objective is to sell its technology rather than the product, they will have to have the required set-up to support the licensees through the production process, which Creative has never done.

Valuation
According to market research firm, GfK, global unit sales of headphones and headsets rose 10% to hit 368m units in 2017.

Based on a projected CAGR of 9.8% over 2016-2024 and assuming a market share of 0.5%-1%, global unit sales of the SXFi dongle could reach 2.2-4.4m sets in 2019. At the recommended retail price of US$150, revenue for this segment could grow to US$333m-665m. 

Ascribing an EV/sales multiple of 1.04x, a 40% discount to recent market transactions (Apple/Beats and Mill Road Capital/Skullcandy), and netting off US$40m cash burn over the next two years, the valuation of Creative' s SXFi dongle could range between $7.97 and $14.46 per share. This also implies that the rest of its loss-making business come for free.

Meanwhile, there are similar competing products in the 3D audio headphone space, including OSSIC X (retail price: US$299) and THX Spatial Audio Platform. Whether Creative can beat its rivals and turn the rave reviews of the SXFi product range into the Sound Blaster of headphones remains to be seen.
