Asia markets close mixed Japanese shares under pressure from stronger yen, falling exports

Asia markets closed mixed on Monday, with Japan' s shares dropping amid renewed strength in yen as fresh data showed the country' s exports continued to fall.

Chinese mainland markets closed up, with the Shanghai composite adding 18.53 points, or 0.66 percent, to 2,844.01, and the Shenzhen composite closed up 26.03 points, or 1.45 percent, at 1,820.99.

On the data front, Japan' s Ministry of Finance data showed Japanese exports were down 10.1 percent on-year in April, reflecting sluggish demand from China, the emerging markets and the US The decline was mostly in line with a Reuters poll of economists, which forecast a 10 percent decrease. Imports for April were down 23.3 percent on-year. The trade balance was 823.47 billion yen.

The yen strengthened after the data, with the dollar-yen pair falling as low as 109.61 from around 110.12 before the data' s release the pair was at 109.75 at 2:33 p.m. HK / SIN.
On Saturday, the U.S. also issued a fresh warning to Japan against competitive currency devaluation.

A stronger yen usually weighs on exporters' shares as it lowers the value of their overseas earnings when they are repatriated to the home currency.

Markets around the region continued to take a relatively benign view of the rising possibility that the U.S. Federal Reserve will act on interest rates sooner rather than later.

Oil prices retreated during Asian hours, with global benchmark Brent down 1.15 percent at $ 48.16 a barrel as of 3:46 p.m. HK / SIN. U.S. crude fell 1.32 percent to $ 47.77 a barrel.

Oil prices also slipped in Asian trade on Monday, hit by a strong dollar and signs that global crude supply is holding up despite unplanned outages, Reuters reported. In a further sign of abundant supply, the number of rigs operated by US drillers was steady last week for the first time this year, the news agency noted. Oil and gas stocks were lower.

Asia set for mixed open, with Fed, dollar in focus

Futures pointed to a mixed open for Asia on Monday, as markets adjust to a slew of comments from the Federal Reserve in recent days about a possible interest rate hike in June.

Australian SPI futures were up 0.1 percent at 5,360, compared to the benchmark S & P / ASX 200' s last close at 5,351.30. Nikkei futures in Chicago were near flat at 16,745, while Osaka futures slipped 0.18 percent at 16,710. The Japanese benchmark index closed at 16,736.35 on friday.

The US central bank sent clear signals to the market on Thursday that a June interest rate hike could be on the cards. New York Fed President William Dudley said that June was definitely a live meeting, while Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker echoed the sentiment for a june hike to Bloomberg Radio.

The Fed' s April meeting minutes also suggested a rate hike was imminent in June, if economic data pointed to stronger growth in the second quarter.

The dollar will be in focus this week in the build-up to the much anticipated June Fed meeting.

" The shift in market expectations for Fed tightening and the confirmation from Fed presidents is a significant development that has shifted the market' s appetite for dollars," Kathy Lien, managing director for foreign exchange strategy at BK Asset Management, said on Friday.

The spat of delistings indicate that many founders are seeing the whacked down prices as an opportunity to buy back their companies cheap cheap. One day they will relist again - likely overseas - and then who loses? Singapore investors. So if you see cheaply and deeply undervalued stocks backed by real assets, businesses and cash - you know what..

Brother, I' d just given feedback to SGX CEO that the sad truth is people are playing for delisting as the only hope to realise the true value of manay stocks.  Taking this to the logical conclusion it means death certificate will eventually be issued.
