STI to cross 3000 boosted by long-term investors Post Reply Rate topic

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Stocks Steady in Europe but Decline Extends in Asia 21 January 2016 16:58 European stocks paused from a steep selloff Thursday after shares on Wall Street pared losses late in the previous session, but Asian shares suffered heavy declines. The Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.9% in early trade ahead of a European Central Bank meeting later in the day. Futures pointed to a 0.1% opening gain for the S & P 500 after the index regained some ground following heavy early losses to close 1.2% lower Wednesday. Changes in futures do not necessarily reflect market moves after the opening bell. Shares across Asia fell sharply after US stocks pushed through their August lows. Concerns over slowing growth in China and plunging oil prices have sent stock markets around the world tumbling since the start of the year, with many major indexes having entered bear-market territory, losing 20% ​ ​ or more from recent highs. In Asian trade, Japan' s Nikkei Stock Average closed down 2.4% after the head of the Bank of Japan said the bank would not consider a negative interest-rate policy. The volatile Shanghai Composite Index lost 3.2% despite a large cash injection from China' s central bank. Though European stocks gained modestly on Thursday, many investors were not convinced the market would steady for long. " We' re in a low growth, low inflation, low interest rate world," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, which holds GBP26.1 billion ($ 40 billion) in assets under management, adding, " The concerns around China and the oil price are symptoms of that. " Brent crude oil was down 1% at $ 27.60 a barrel. While low oil prices should be a boon to net oil importers, recent drops have raised fears about energy companies and the banks that have lent heavily to them in recent years. Investors also pointed to a loss of support from central banks, which has left markets fragile after ultralow interest rates boosted asset prices for years. The European Central Bank meets later Thursday after subdued inflation across the eurozone caused the bank in December to cut its deposit rate deeper into negative territory and extend the duration of its asset-purchase program. " Although the recent deterioration will clearly be a source of concern ... We think members will want to see the impact of the measures just decided in December before announcing another package," economists at Barclays wrote in a note. In currencies, the euro was up 0.2% against the dollar at $ 1.0894, while the dollar fell 0.1% against the yen at Y117.0640. Gold fell 0.3% to $ 1,102.70 an ounce.
