Broker' s Report SMRT kept at ' underperform' by Daiwa with $ 1.31 target after Khaw' s comments SINGAPORE (Dec 4): Daiwa is maintaining its " underperform" call on SMRT Corp (Valuation: 1.10, Fundamental: 1.05) with a 12-month target price of $ 1.31 after comments made by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a Straits Times article appear to have fuelled talk of a potential nationalisation of the Singapore rail network or acquisition of the rail assets in the near term. In a Friday report, analyst Jame Osman says: " The biggest upside risk to our thesis remains a potential near-term acquisition of SMRT' s rail assets, as this would likely substantially improve its free cash flow profile However, we argue that it would be. in the best interests of both the government and the Singapore public if SMRT were to fulfil all existing obligations with respect to network efficacy, before addressing any issue of asset acquisition. " Further, given that the government already owns rail infrastructure, Osman thinks a transition to a new rail model is unlikely to alter the complexion of SMRT' s rail business positively, from an operational standpoint. According to the Straits Times' article, Khaw highlighted the need for " improving integration" in the current rail model between the designer and builder (government) and the operators (SMRT and SBST) by " forging a culture of ' One Team' " . " We take this to mean that the regulator will strengthen its engineering team to ensure that its capabilities are on par with the operators in being equipped to deal with rail-network issues. Further, an MoU has been signed among the various stakeholders (government and operators) to align objectives and interests, " says Osman. " Our read-through is that rail reliability remains the government' s central focus, and it is keen to reassure the public of the standard of the rail network by ensuring an adequately skilled engineering workforce, as well as by forging an alignment of interests among all stakeholders , " he adds. SMRT is up 4.7% at $ 1.55.   |

Hi,   The long term prospect is very bright.   Once it is light mode, there will be no depreciation write off and the savings acan be passed on as dividends.   Moreover, I heard the past depreciation can be remunerated as well, according to Desmond.   Anyway with the abundunce of cash, not only they can buy Thomson Line but also save on interest payments on loans.   Whether looking at short or mid term, it is a safe and profitable investment.   At least better than Sembcorb, just my humble view! |

My point of view is if LTA does buy over SMRT assets, this could offload a lot of cash to SMRT.   For the long term, it also gives them financial backing to bid for the Thompson-East Coast line, potentially to be awarded by next year or 2017.   Thats based on historical timeline of awarding of MRT' s to operators.   Based on the # of interchanges which cross with SMRT' s existing 3 lines, they do have an advantage of operating this.   It' s a gamble, but worth the wait.   |

Highlight Singapore mulling options for SMRT including sale of trains: sources December 4, 2015: 1:09 PM Singapore is studying options for subway operator SMRT Corp. (Valuation: 1.10, Fundamental: 1.05), including having the company sell its trains to the government, and plans to propose recommendations as soon as the first quarter of next year, people with knowledge of the matter said. Possibilities under discussion include SMRT, which has a market value of $ 2.4 billion, selling its physical assets to the government so it can focus on the business of operating subway services, according to the people. State investment company Temasek Holdings Pte is also considering whether it needs to keep control of SMRT, though it has no immediate plans to sell its 55%, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. Singapore' s Land Transport Authority, which designed the subway system and regulates train and bus operators, and Temasek are both involved in the study, the people said. SMRT has faced public criticism for service disruptions in the past four years even as it expanded its network. Singapore Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan appointed an engineering expert in October to advise on rail transformation and said the government was discussing changes in the industry structure to bring about " better alignment of incentives." In July, thousands of commuters were stranded across more than 50 stations on two main train lines, leading the government to fine SMRT $ 5.4 million. The Land Transport Authority said in an e-mailed reply to questions that discussions with SMRT on the transition to a new rail financing framework " are still ongoing." A spokesman for Temasek declined to comment, while a representative for SMRT could not immediately comment. Any sale of SMRT' s trains would follow a similar restructuring announced for the city-state' s public bus system last year. Singapore will own all bus infrastructure, such as depots and vehicles, while bus operators will bid for the right to run services on routes laid out by the Land Transport Authority   |

Hi,   A pleasant surprise!   It has gone up so much, now it is moving towards $1.60, hopefuly can break it and move to $1.70 soon.   $2 may be too high but $1.80 should be achievable! |

While there is no denial about the intention of the governement to take over the hard assets from  SMRT the question about timing and formula of pricing could be a surprise to SMRT shareholders.  There is a political and social cost that has to be passed back to SMRT , as the government would  not like to be been seen as socialising the burden. It could be drastically in SMRT disfavour as for   many years it was seen as profitable at the expense of its customers. A huge social TAX may be priced into this formula that has yet to be agreed between the 2 parties. As the maxim says Nothing is for Free.  |

Hi,   Now everyone is talking about either to nationalize or the government taking over all the hardware of the SMRT, so when will it be implemented?   I think it should be very soon.   When the government has released national statistics, asked for public opinions and come out with many changes like setting up a transport school, according to my experience, akan datang!   Trust me, unless the government does not mind the public transport keeps on breaking down, then it should be announced around 3 months' time.   Nationalize is too big an issue but taking over hardware should be a more appropriate measure as it combines the public resources and private efficiency!   I am holding 40 lots so it should be quite a safe bet! |

Any thoughts on the recent blog by transport minister Khaw Boon Wan?   based on his breakdown, he seems to suggest around 81 new trains which will go under SMRT' s tracks... I doubt if SMRT has the financial power to purchase these much even until 2019.   Can this suggest that the government is starting discussion with SMRT with it' s new rail financing framework?   Any potential that this could shoot-up to the stars? :) |

You can google for Ascending Triangle. See this link for chart pattern.

Well, if you have attended a basic course in technical analysis of stocks, you would have known what a triangle is.   Basically you look at the price chart of a stock over 3 to 6 months time span, and look for patterns. One particular well known pattern is called a triangle, and it can be either ascending or descending. I dont know how to attach an image here to show you, but you can refer to the price chart of SMRT between mid Aug & mid Sep (view it as a small section on a 6 month chart from say, May~ Oct). You will notice that the pessimists are pushing down the prices, but at the same time the optimists are fighting back to push up the prices over that period. If you draw 2 lines, one on top and another one on bottom on the chart during this time span of fighting, you will notice that these two lines will almost meet each other, looking like an triangle. This is the showdown point. The price can suddenly shoot up or crash down after this.
