Singapore Airlines (SGX:C6L) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price

There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we' ll want to see a proven  return  on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding  base  of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in  Singapore Airlines'   (SGX:C6L) returns on capital, so let' s have a look.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those that aren' t sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Singapore Airlines:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.087 = S$2.8b ÷ (S$44b - S$13b)  (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

Thus,  Singapore Airlines has an ROCE of 8.7%.  On its own, that' s a low figure but it' s around the 8.1% average generated by the Airlines industry.

In the above chart we have measured Singapore Airlines' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you' re interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our  free  analyst report for Singapore Airlines  .

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it' s good to see it' s heading in the right direction. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 8.7%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it' s worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 37%. This can indicate that there' s plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination tha' ' s common among multi-baggers.

In Conclusion...

To sum it up, Singapore Airlines has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Since the stock has only returned 14% to shareholders over the last five years, the promising fundamentals may not be recognized yet by investors. Given that, we' d look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.

JULY 2024 OPERATING RESULTS
In July 2024, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group' s passenger traffic grew by 3.6% from a year before, while passenger capacity increased by 8.7%.
SIA and Scoot carried 3.2 million passengers in total during the month (+6.7% year-on-year).
The Group passenger load factor (PLF) came in at 85.6%, with SIA and Scoot posting monthly PLFs of 84.7% and 88.9% respectively.
SIA experienced lower load factors for East Asia route region notwithstanding robust growth in passenger traffic, due to the substantial capacity expansion in North Asia.
Cargo loads rose by 18.5% from the previous year, supported by robust e-commerce demand, some demand spillover resulting from disruptions to sea freight, and port congestion.
This outpaced the capacity expansion of 8.2%. Consequently, cargo load factor came in at 57.4% (+5.0 percentage points year-o--year).
At the end of July 2024, the Group' s passenger network1 covered 125 destinations in 36 countries and territories.
SIA served 78 destinations, while Scoot served 69 destinations. The cargo network1 comprised 129 destinations in 37 countries and territories.

It' s a way to make money in a falling market. An investor borrows shares and sells them on, waits for the price to fall, buys the same number of shares at the lower price and hands them back to the lender.
The investor pockets the price difference and the counterpart who lent them the shares takes a commission. It works as long as the shares fall. If they rise, the investor could lose money instead.

SIA reports lower quarterly profit as yields fall and fuel costs rise
Net fuel cost increased 30.1 per cent to $1.37 billion, mainly due to higher volumes uplifted, price increases and a lower fuel hedging gain.
In addition to the weaker operating performance, the bottom line was also weighed down by a reduction in net interest income, a lower surplus on disposal of aircraft, spares and spare engines, and a lower share of profits of associated companies. But this decline was partially mitigated by a fall in tax expense.

Cash and bank balances fell by $1.2 billion to $10.1 billion, mainly due to the redemption of all remaining MCBs. SIA paid out the principal amount of $1.74 billion on June 24, which in turn was partially mitigated by the $1.2 billion of net cash generated from operations, including proceeds from forward sales.
In addition to cash on hand, the group has access to $3.3 billion of committed lines of credit, all of which remain untapped.

The firm said it " remains well positioned to navigate these headwinds, supported by its strong balance sheet and robust digital capabilities, as well as its firm commitment to maintaining cost discipline" .
It also noted that it would continue to pursue deeper commercial partnerships with like-minded carriers, particularly in fast-growing markets within the Asia-Pacific region, to enhance connectivity and widen travel options to customers.
