Sembmarine finds its LNG niche

The Singapore yard is shoring up its status as the go-to company for LNGC repairs

Land-scarce Singapore may not be well-suited to building large-scale LNG carriers, a segment that South Korean shipbuilders now dominate, but its strategic location at the heart of Asia&rsquo s trading routes means that it remains among the most popular ports of call for these vessels &ndash a situation that creates significant shiprepair opportunities for the island nation.


A key beneficiary is SembCorp Marine, whose Admiralty yard, previously known as Sembawang Shipyard, has cemented its position as world number one for LNG carrier repairs by vessel volume, according to  Ship and Offshore Repair Journal. Admiralty repaired and upgraded 33 LNG carriers in 2014.

Sembmarine&rsquo s client list includes LNG heavy-hitters such as BP, BG and Exmar Shipmanagement. However, it is likely to expand as more LNG owners and operators set up base in Singapore, which is positioning itself to become the top Asia-Pacific LNG trading hub.

Like South Korea, Singapore is keen to encourage the use of LNG as bunker fuel. Supporting this strategic thrust, Singapore&rsquo s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has extended to vessel owners US$2 million towards investment in LNG-fuelled ships, and is willing to fund up to two vessels per eligible owner or six vessels in all from three distinct owners.

However, unlike the shipyards of South Korea, Sembmarine has set its sights on repair and conversion rather than newbuildings.

With plans to expand further, having already launched a second development phase at the new Tuas Boulevard yard, Sembmarine is well-positioned to capture growing demand for repair and conversion work as the global LNG-carrier fleet expands.

Phase two of its development will add two drydocks, each measuring 255m by 52m and with 150,000 dwt of holding capacity.  Sembmarine aims to complete the marine works for this phase in the first quarter of 2017.

Tuas Boulevard is already home to a 412m-long drydock that Sembmarine claims is the longest and deepest in Asia for shiprepair.

Construction of large-scale LNG carriers may be off the table at the moment, but Sembmarine expects to continue to improve its track record in floating storage and offloading units mainly for crude production and in FLNG conversions and module fabrication and assembly for onshore LNG plants.

Exactly, the demand for rigs is on the rise as long as crude oil stays above $70, evdienced by the increase in utilisation rate.

Some strange forumer said there is not much demand for crude oil when it is trading at above $80 now. 

As mentioned in their Q3 update, SCM is getting more enquiries on their partially completed setes drillships as they can be completed within a year or so.


Also, SCM has long gravitated towards natural gas and they are the world No.1 yard for upograde and retrofit of LNG carrier.

Whatever the case, the bottom line is how utilisation and charter rates translate into the demand for drill ships. At the moment, the demand is picking up rapidly. So, you don't have to waste your time looking at so many variables, just look at the demand will do, it reflects the interaction of all the variables

The historical charter rates for drill ships average around $180k to $550k at the rare extreme. For instance, in 2006, the average day rate is $180k. The normal range is $200k to $350k.
Your figure of $750k to $1m is highly exaggerated.

It needs 2.5b contracts to break even. Right now they have 1.4b worth of contracts on hand. So confirmed losses till end of 2022 and if the losses amount to the same quantum as 2021, they will be begging for money by Oct 2022.

Maybe hope and prayers can indeed bring in the huge contracts and catapult SMM to 30 cts.

These showed market sentiments and customer confidence in SMM.  O& M is a very tight industry and the reputation of a company precedes its contracts.  It will be wise to look at how many big contracts SMM can garner by Mar 2022.

If no contract by Mar 2022, SHs need to be concerned.  We can all hope for the best but nothing beats solid profits and big contract

SCM price is expected to go higher as it incur more losses and right issues.
With no contract win, the share price will soar higher.
With late delivery and shortage of workers, projects will become more profitable.

UOB analyst report for SCM is out on sginvestors. Key takeaway: SCM bidding for projects worth over $10billion. Higher intetest on partially completed Setes drillships. Mgt confirmed no need for further fund raising. More upgrade and retrofit contracts on the way. Labour shortage easing as MOM has opened the border for India foreign workers.

would be cash flow positive by next Jan.  As non of their projects were cancelled, the expected cash collection upon project completion and delivery was simply delayed.

Overall, SMM&rsquo s 3Q21 had a number of positives including new R& U contracts, and that order visibility has improved across all segments. A someone repeatedly ask everybody to short sell at 8 cents. Now he said he himself ONLY short sell when it was 8.9 cents.

This thread for leisure only, no need take it to heart. Most, if not all, of the longist of this is lose money one. Maybe only < 1% who bought 0.078-0.083 makes money, provided if sell now. Many years later, may pour in more money, that' s all.

SM is now above its day MA60, and its day MA200 is ard 0.124, it will thus go towards that and clear it in due course....no amount of ghost story humtum analysis or shouting is going to bend the MA60 line so easily....it is the collective input of the human traders and trading machines that will dictate the ma line

SINGAPORE  &ndash   Sembcorp Marine&rsquo s Tuas Boulevard Yard has completed the load-out and tandem lift of the topsides structure for  Shell&rsquo s Vito FPU project  in the  US Gulf of Mexico.

Following load-out, the topsides structure was transported via the yard&rsquo s heavy-lift vessel  Elite Prosperity  and lifted onto the FPU hull using two goliath cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 30,000 metric tons (33,069 tons) and a 100-m (328-ft) hook height.

Sembcorp&rsquo s Brazilian yard Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz is performing modification and integration work on the  FPSO  P-71, which will be deployed at  Petrobras&rsquo Itapu field  offshore Brazil. The vessel is due to be delivered in 4Q 2022.

The group is also continuing with pre-FID work on the circular  Cambo FPSO  which Siccar Point Energy aims to deploy west of Shetland. Sembcorp anticipates FID will follow soon

Please forgive this guy. He kana burnt too badly by Keppel corp. From $10+ 10+ years ago until now less than half. Poor chap...what stock market can do to some people.

What SCM facing now is exactly what Shipyards in Europe facng 10-15 years ago.

They are no longer the cost effective, labour effective preferred yard.

There are still shipyards in Europe survive well like Keppel O& M now.

So, We may only require 1 shipyard company in singapore, she will be Keppel O& M.

SMM has been stating their problems clearly and openly.  Yet some investors choose to close an eye to the truth and expect SMM to defeat the 1st and 2nd companies to win billion dollar contracts.

SMM is just laying the ground for them to give excuses when the sky fall

This is very important milestone as Sembmarine is bidding for more than one Psi20k Semi new builds at the Gulf of Mexico.

With its experience in psi20k technology completing Transocean Titan and building Shell Vito/ Whale, and their 30 ton lifting capacity Goliath crane, SCM is well placed for the bids.


In the meantime, we have Cambo' s FID by end of the year, Napant in Q1 and Darodo in  Q2.  Timing just nice as SCM  do not have the manpower to start a mega proj\ect until around March next year.
