Why do people call "shell company"?
1) Ignorant
2) Perceived Ignorance

Why can just round 18% of NOL can be sold for $1.2 Billion?
1) Value
2) Fundemental

In conclusion, Ignorant people sees as shell company. While, smart people sees as value & fundemental company.

NOL could return to profit this year

Besides a gain from the USD1.2 billion sale of APL Logistics to Japanese freight forwarding giant Kintetsu World Express, NOL would also gain from substantial fuel savings, said CIMB Securities&rsquo Raymond Yap.

Yap has given a 52-week target price of SGD1.53 (USD1.13) for NOL&rsquo s stock, which is currently trading at SGD0.99.
He predicts a USD1.02 billion profit for NOL this year, reversing a USD260 million loss for 2014.

He also thinks that NOL, led by CEO Ng Yat Chung, could pay 10% of its 2015 net profits to shareholders as dividends.

Yap said, &ldquo NOL is likely to enjoy a bumper net profit this year because of the material USD900 million expected capital gain from the sale of APL Logistics, while lower bunker costs, efficiency gains from the newbuilding deliveries, and savings from charter returns will lower APL&rsquo s operating costs. The likely rise in transpacific freight rates in FY15 will also help APL turn a small profit this year.&rdquo

Yap said, &ldquo Asia-Europe spot rates will likely come under pressure in 2015 because we expect demand growth to weaken after frenetic restocking activity last year and heavy deliveries of ultra-large container vessels. However, transpacific rates may strengthen as the US economy is robust and carriers are determined to push through 20% higher contract rates from May 2015. NOL has almost twice the transpacific cargoes than Asia-Europe cargoes, so the overall effect is still beneficial.&rdquo

The labour dispute between the Pacific Maritime Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which hit shipments to and from the US West Coast, has been tentatively resolved with a settlement on a new five-year pact covering 29 West Coast ports.

Hot stock: Interest in NOL may continue on new development from West Coast ports

SHARES of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), which surged to a high of S$1.065 on Wednesday morning following news of its plans to divest its logistics business, have since stabilised.

As at 2.45pm on Monday, NOL was trading at S$1.02, down some 0.49 per cent from Wednesday' s closing price.

But NOL may be in play this week again due to positive news related to its core liner business, CMC Markets analyst Nicholas Teo said.

" Late Friday, it was announced that the US West Coast dock workers and their employers reached a five-year contract deal. This averted a shutdown of 29 ports that could have cost the US economy and NOL heavily," Mr Teo said.

In its recent earnings release, NOL had blamed the industrial slowdown and subsequent congestion in the West Coast ports - a major contributing segment of NOL' s container liner business - as a key reason for the slide in both quarterly and annual revenues for the company.

" This new development from the West Coast Ports could offer traders a reason to bid up the stock again," Mr Teo noted.

The sale of APL was a very smart move.

Its better than a rights issue and it got more than the market expectation of US750mio-US900mio that was reported some time back

Net gains US900m = SGD 1.2b...this is about 45c per share

last FY NAV 90c

so total about S$1.35

however, even DBS Vickers prices at 1.1x book, which makes it about S$1.48 fair value.

with the debt/equity ratio pared doen to 1.08x, its begining to look more attractive at least on the balance sheet.

all it needs is a flat or slightly positive quarter and it will start sailing again.

its not gonna happen overnight , but look at SMRT and Tiger -- all the ah kong stocks and you will realise the will to keep them alive is stronger than many of the other stocks in the market.

Who care about past stock performance as stock is priced in anticipation of  future earning / growth prospect, US in growth of 3% + this year so they got theme to speculate and time to speculate when the impasses in west coast port is resolved. Buy if u got holding power and short when it hit 1.50+ but there might be TH privatisation as they did it before but fail in 2006. And yes after divestment of APL logisitics, NOL would had problem staying listed due to no previous record of pure container plays in market all is either bundled with logistic/bulk commodity/ship building/ offshore support. For investor interest , it is best to sell off non core asset and TH privatised it buying back all share , cake walk for them since they alreayd owned like 67%.

APL liner division still got 2 non revenue generating asset, west coast port terminals and 1.1 million containers fleet, both could bring in billion if divested. Broken ship still got treasure hidden away as sale of APl logitics US $1.2 B which is 64% of total market capitalisation lol. This remind me of Natsteel which is boring industrial but got hidden treasures Natsteel electronics lol. NOL NAV would be $1.36 after deal is approved by shareholder in APR 50% jack up from current NAV.

Dear Know-Your-Stuff,
Great Insight. Keep it up :)

Know-Your-Stuff      ( Date: 22-Feb-2015 11:16) Posted:

Thanks to all bro who shared their views on NOL. Since the announcement of APL, i dived in to analyze. Here' s a few key points.

1. NAV for NOL is $1.38 (or US$1.02) after sale of APL. There is a 36% upside based on book value alone.

2. Bloomberg news : US west coast employers signed a 5 years contract with the union / employees. This is a  very good news. President Obama breathed a sign of relief because this will ensure US economy continue its path of recovery, 3%+ GDP growth this year. All 29 ports re-opened on Saturday night (SG time). NOL is a key  liner in the west coast with about 65% concentration there. US economic recovery and this news are  really good news for NOL. I expect their NOL to turn a profit this year. My personal prediction...

3. A few Wall Street investment bankers recently mentioned that container shipping has likely  bottomed after 7 years. Can' t remember exactly which bankers, leave it to you to verify yourself.

4. I guessed TH took a smart calculated move to sell APL. Why sell at this time when everyone say  NOL will be left with no more profitable biz after the sale. Aren' t they  afraid ? It doesn' t look like it. They are the BB.

5. Based on the above. There is a possibility that TH may take it private this year after the APL sale concluded, based on the NAV or slightly higher. Or M& A with a bigger rival.

Remember... stock market is forward looking. We can go on arguing here instead of taking actions. By the time it becomes a reality, the price would have soar, and it becomes a buyers' remorse.:) I believed that this is the year for NOL, my own personal view, you don' t have to agree. Time will tell if i can repeat my feat for StatsChippac, buy  when  everyone is said the company is dead. The rest is history. :)

The debate with MetalTrader on how to attack CaoCao with
all 3 people (Stockhero, Darocupcake & Earlybird14) can be seen as below:

EarlyBird14- Chickened Out @ $0.85 (Before the fight), claiming dividend is better. (But NOL had passed his dividend and crossed $1 and hit a high point of $1.065 on18 Feb)
Darocupcake- Defeated in Vallianz (Current stock price is halfed when MetalTrader advised)
Stockhero- MetalTrader exposed his " Average" Scheme in NOL.

your target price range ($1.065 - $1.50) is far too wide to be considered a prediction, at least not a good one.

it is no better than my prediction that the price will stay within the range of $0.85-$1.25 over the next 2 weeks.

in a way, if my ' prediction' turns out to be accurate, it can be considered better than your because of your wider range.
