UK inflation falls to Bank of England&rsquo s 2% target ahead of elections

  • U.K. inflation fell to the Bank of England&rsquo s target of 2.0% in May, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday.
  • The headline reading declined from 2.3% in April, bringing it in line with the central bank&rsquo s 2% target.
  • The print is the last key economic measure ahead of national elections in July.

Treasury yields retreat as weak retail sales raise concerns about consumer

Retail sales  were up just 0.1% in May, below the 0.2% expected by economists, according to Dow Jones. There was also a downward revision to the April data, which now shows a 0.2% decline.

The Fed is &lsquo playing with fire&rsquo by not cutting rates, says creator of &lsquo Sahm Rule&rsquo recession indicator

  • Economist Claudia Sahm has shown that when the unemployment rate&rsquo s three-month average is half a percentage point higher than its 12-month low, the economy is in recession.
  • Sahm said the Fed is taking a big risk by not moving now with gradual cuts.
  • Fed officials last week sharply lowered their individual forecasts for rate cuts this year, going from three expected reductions at the March meeting to one this time around.

Private payrolls growth slows to 152,000 in May, much less than expected, ADP says

  • ADP reported that companies added 152,000 jobs in May, fewer than the downwardly revised 188,000 in April and below the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 175,000.
  • Nearly all the hiring came from the services sector, with goods producers contributing just a net 3,000 to the total.
  • Trade, transportation and utilities led with 55,000 new jobs, while education and health services added 46,000, and construction contributed 32,000.

European stocks close at record highs after European Central Bank cuts interest rates

The ECB confirmed a widely-anticipated reduction in interest rates at its meeting in Frankfurt, despite  lingering inflationary pressures  in the 20-nation euro zone. It takes the central bank&rsquo s key rate to 3.75%, down from a record 4% where it has been since September 2023.

" Private payrolls rose by 152,000 in May, according to ADP. That was  below the 175,000 expected  by economists, according to Dow Jones, and down from 188,000 in April. Those numbers came a day after the Labor Department said there were 8.059 million job vacancies in April, the lowest in three years less than the expected 8.4 million."

At most 2, maybe 1 or none at all.

Treasury yields slip as U.S. manufacturing sector shows signs of contraction



Signs of contraction in the U.S. manufacturing sector weighed on yields. The ISM manufacturing index measured 48.7 in May, below an estimate that called for 49.6. A reading below 50 is an indication of a contraction.
