Apple  is in talks with  Alibaba  to bring its mobile payments system to China, according to an interview with Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Apply Pay &ndash which allows users to hold up their iPhone to a reader and pay for items &ndash was launched in the U.S. last September and has seen" great momentum,"   CEO Tim Cook said last month.

But now the Cupertino, CA-based giant wants to expand the payment system to China -- the company' s second-biggest market by revenues.

" We very much want to get Apple Pay in China," Cook told Xinhua in an interview published late Monday. " I' m very bullish on Apple Pay in China."   (Tweet this)

China has become a  crucial market for Apple  and it is now selling more iPhones in the country than in the U.S. The American company has also eclipsed domestic rival Xiaomi to become the  biggest smartphone player in China(Tweet this)

Apple was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

Challenges

With a huge number of smartphone users in China, expanding Apple Pay into the country makes sense -- but the company will face a number of challenges.

Apple Pay works on a technology known as  near-field communication (NFC), a wireless system that allows people to pay with credit cards linked to their smartphone by tapping the device on a reader.

In China, UnionPay &ndash that state-owned credit and debit card operator &ndash dominates the processing of payments made by NFC. As such, UnionPay sets the transaction fees, which could be a potential hurdle for Apple in China.

This is likely one reason why the technology giant is looking to partner with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which owns its own mobile payment system known as Alipay. This uses different methods of paying for items, such as scanning a special barcode. Alibaba is also experimenting with different authentication methods, such as taking a selfie to authorize a payment.

The exact details of how Alibaba and Apple could work together are unclear, but any partnership will give the U.S. technology giant a way into the mobile payments market in the world' s second-largest economy.

" Ant Financial (the Alibaba affiliate behind Alipay) is open to work with various partners in order to provide secure, efficient and convenient online and mobile payment services for over 300 million Alipay users," a spokesperson told CNBC by email.

not arguing.

in HK, my friends have to separately buy HKT and PCCW.

here, we buy 1 PCRD, we are buying HKT, PCCW, PCPD (one whole package, very good. no wonder they say buy package got ' discount' )

u say this cos maybe u let go of PCRD ' too early' and may want to ' buy back' at lower px

u forget and are simpy ignorant that ' ANY DIVIDENDS paid out by PCCW and HKT" will have to go to PCRD (it is up to PCRD to decide what to do with the dividends or cash paid out by PCCW and HKT) .....but definitely VALUE is added into PCRD

jwong016      ( Date: 11-May-2015 10:27) Posted:

don' t forget that at least PCCW and HKT pay regular dividends CURRENTLY, PCRD does not. it is also not a certainty that PCRD pays dividends.

So , i will categorize 3 groups of people " who may not be very very smart" :

1. Those HKers and funds companies who bought PCCW in HK (i must say i am very surprised, as HKers are supposed to see ' every opportunity at every angle' )

2. Those HKers who did not buy in Spore PCRD and instead buy in HK PCCW and HKT

3. Those Sporeans and local funds who did not buy PCRD after knowing ' it all' yet complaining SGX is ' not much opportunities...etc.... etc'

CalvinChia888      ( Date: 11-May-2015 10:06) Posted:

If i want to own PCCW shares, i have a choice :

to buy in HK PCCW shares or, to buy in Spore PCRD shares

those who are smart and quick enough will grab PCRD shares in Spore   (as by doing so, you ' are actually indirectly buying PCCW and HKT at a great discount' )

But I also did my post my comment / opinion here that we can buy Alibaba stock in US. I mentioned about below USD 70 buy how much, below xx buy how much ...etc...but it was deleted by SJ.

Alibaba is the Most Exciting Stock I can shortlist from so many thousands of stocks. Apple and Google dont even come close.

I mentioned before also, if Alibaba is owned by an American say MZ instead of a Chinese say JM (though it is also owned by Japan Softbank and US Yahoo), Alibaba stock would be more than $150 by now.

We are all grown ups to make decisions and judgements for ourselves.

The pointers are there. If you want someone to say " yes, 100% sure and confident, then i aint the one. Only RL and JM can give the OK call"

Dear CalvinChia8888, how confident are you that the Alibaba/PCCW will materialize ? If this is materialized, PCRD will be moving up very quickly.

Why they renew the " Share Buy Back Mandate" ?

They actually used up all the previous Buy Back Allocation, 100%

More than 300 mil shares bought back by Company. To be exact, 304,319,200 shares bought back.

NOT A SINGLE DROP LEFT OUT.

Whch company in Singapore has ever done that ? Myabe this is the 1st time in SGX history 100% allocation bought back.

Think Apple didnt even have such ' record of honor' in their BuyBack Scheme.

You want obvious hint? This is obvious.

Charlie2310      ( Date: 08-May-2015 09:08) Posted:

Whether or not Alibaba/PCCW will materialize, there is no worry.  Once the blackout period is over, it is almost certain that the company will continue to do buybacks.  They were doing so at 405 level.  Which is higher than current last done price.  However, if investors want to take profit first, there is nothing wrong.  Nobody ever died from taking profits first.

But then, for me, I see good news coming from results and support from the shareholders.  Don' t see a need to take profits so early.  The dinner isn' t over yet, why so gan cheong to leave?  :)
