The future of wild fish is getting brighter and brighter .... Organic, Organic, Organic.

High hopes for organic fishmeal  -  Hayduk started producing organic fishmeal, a high-end product with natural antioxidants  thanks to Rosemary herb, in the second half of 2013  .This will involve boosting production of premium and organic fishmeal for  niche markets,  Hayduk' s CEO Walter Martinez told  Undercurrent News.

New Pescanova plan leaves aquaculture out

May 2, 2014, 9:04 am

As the  creditor banks&rsquo bailout plan  for Pescanova is said to have received backing from almost 70% of creditors, the future for the company' s aquaculture businesses is looking uncertain.

New Pescanova, the company that will result from the restructuring plan  should creditors back itwill continue focusing on fishing and processing, but will have to pull a damper on  the aquaculture adventure started more than a decade ago by the company&rsquo s former chairman Manuel Fernandez de Sousa Faro, reported the local newspaper,  La Voz de Galicia.

According to the newspaper, the  Spanish multinational will not be allowed to spend the &euro 125 million capital injection proposed in new restructuring plan on its aquaculture businesses.

These include the Latin American shrimp farms of Nicaragua, Ecuador, Honduras and Guatemala the Chilean salmon businesses  Acuinova Chile and Nova Austral, and the turbot operations in Mira, Portugal.

Under the banks' restructuring proposal, the businesses in  Chile, Portugal and Guatemala will have to restructure their debt with local banks.

The bailout plan concludes Pescanova&rsquo s aquaculture division was behind the &euro 3.6 billion  debt accumulated by the company. This debt was kept hidden from its balance sheet by spreading it across an opaque  network of subsidiaries and shadow companies.

On the other hand, the plan highlights the need for an industrial improvement of the company' s frozen and processing division, through the introduction of new frozen products &mdash as this line has better expected growth and higher average prices &mdash and the processing of value-added products.

Within fishing, the bet will focus on a better use of existing licenses in Mozambique and Namibia.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, the  plan is said to have received backing from nearly 70% of creditors &mdash perhaps unsurprisingly, since leading bank creditors are the ones who submitted it. It crucially leaves Damm and Luxempart, Pescanova&rsquo s largest shareholders,  out in the cold,  with no ownership stakes left.

As reported, organic fishmeal is in demand and price is going up. For your reading pleasure ....

Hayduk aims to quadruple premium, organic fishmeal production

hayduk_fishmealApril 24, 2014, 4:10 pm

Flush with a new $150 million loan, Peruvian anchovy catcher and producer Pesquera Hayduk is focusing efforts  on substantially upping  its value-added fishmeal production.

This will involve boosting production of premium and organic fishmeal  for  niche markets, Hayduk' s  CEO  Walter Martinez told  Undercurrent News.

Martinez said  Hayduk, which secured  an eight-year  $150m syndicated loan in February, is investing $7m  to improve its vessels' cooling systems and install  new technology in its fishmeal plants.

Fishmeal is no longer a commodity, said the executive, as international certifying bodies can measure its nutrients, such as specific amino acids or omega 3, verifying and highlighting its benefits.

" This leads us to change our strategy to differentiate ourselves and be more aggressive to reach niche markets," Martinez told  Undercurrent.

The planned increase is not negligible.

For 2014, Hayduk expects  to increase its premium fishmeal volumes to 10,000-15,000 metric tons, which is at least  a four-fold increase from  the previous year.

In 2013, premium fishmeal sales already more than doubled  to 2,300t &ndash 142% up year-on-year.

That said the increases are from a very small base &mdash Hayduk only launched its premium fishmeal offer in 2012. At just  950t, it accounted for only  0.01% of the company&rsquo s total fishmeal production  that year.

The same year, prime and super prime fishmeal accounted for  60% of Hayduk' s total fishmeal production,  at  20,395 metric tons and 25,603t respectively, according to its annual report.

The progressive increase of premium fishmeal output involves a push to maximize the value of production.

" Prices for premium are higher than super prime fishmeal, as this product has higher protein content and more freshness," Martinez said.

Super prime  fishmeal from Peru is currently trading  at around $1,600 to $1,620 per metric ton,  according to industry suppliers.

" Ten years ago selling prime or super prime fishmeal was tough, even markets like China preferred to buy standard. However, selling standard fishmeal is more difficult today," Martinez said.

" Chinese companies have realized it is better to use higher quality fishmeal."

Super prime fishmeal' s main markets are Asia and Europe.

High hopes for organic fishmeal

Hayduk started producing organic fishmeal, a high-end product with natural antioxidants thanks to Rosemary herb, in the second half of 2013

After reaching sales of 1,050t, the group  expects to increase production this year as clients start learning the benefits of our product, Martinez said.

The brand new product has great demand in Italy and England niche markets and its price reaches $70 to $100 above super prime fishmeal.

" [Organic fishmeal] is being requested by the European and the US market, given its health benefits and product safety. There is a tendency to change uses, considering the levels of amino acids and nutritional characteristics found only in anchovy," Martinez said.

This graph provided by Stockpicker makes thing easy to grasp & clear, with the catch remaining unchange while the price continue to trend upward. The fish industry will continue to thrive. The management has definitely done the right thing to be the market leader in the industry.

The message is not about El-nino or quotas but about prices being  determined by supply and demand..as the wild catch is reducing output,  the aquaculture farm is increasing output to replace the shortfall. Whether the price increase would help Copeinca or not or  whether the price should increase at all after a hefty jump in last few years will depend on the balance of supply.    Yes,    the aquaculture farm do need fish meal   question is why the supply must come from wild catch?  By 2018 or thereabout,  the aquacultural farm' s output will outstrip the wild catch

Stockpicker, thanks for the report. It said " 2010 was a very special year, during which both moderate " El Niñ o" event and " La Niñ a" occurred, reducing quotas and catch by almost half the volumes of a normal year. Despite that, cash flow generation was strong."

Since this 2010 happening, Peru Production Ministry is watchful and mindful of it. They have brought forward the date of first fishing season to 23 April which is 3 weeks ahead.

The fishing companies are also more prepared and have better understanding of the effect. They are confidence of bringing the catch 2.5m tons quota.

" The fishing situation in Peru will be clearer in the next few days .... " as reported.

He said his " best guess" is that prices will trend up through August and then decline, as is the usual pattern. Just look out .... the result is on the way

Skipjack buyers come back into market as prices start to firm

April 29, 2014, 6:10 pm

Prices for skipjack tuna in Bangkok, Thailand are firming up again, having  seemingly hit the bottom in April.

Deals in April were done at $1,160 per metric ton, cost and freight (CNF), as buyers sat back and waited for the prices to hit rock bottom.

That seems to have happened, two sources in the US and one in Asia told  Undercurrent News.

Deals have been done at between $1,250-$1,275t for May, as " fishing is slowing down, while demand is starting to pick up, which is driving fish price off the bottom" , said one US source.

" We expect a continued firming &mdash albeit at a very gradual rate," he told  Undercurrent.

" Canned buyers are now back in the market and demand picking up," said another, also based in the US.

This source said deals in Bangkok have been done at $1,250t, but there has been some Indian Ocean fish done at $1,275t, with EU credentials as a premium, he said. " I believe there' s already talk of $1,300t for June. Not surprising."

The Asia based source confirmed the picture.

" May deals are expected to be in the $1,250-$1,300 range. Hard to say why, but I suspect that buyers of finished goods perceived April ($1,160) as the bottom, hence they are now buying while prices are still low," he told  Undercurrent.

He said his " best guess" is that prices will trend up through August and then decline, as is the usual pattern.

Peru' s Production Ministry has done well by allowing early start for the fishing season with an increase in  fish quota to 2.5m tons.  &ldquo The fishing season will take place earlier so companies can catch higher volumes,&rdquo Ghezzi said.

The real concern is not about El Nino or whether can they catch 2.5m tons .... rather  the prices .... how high !!!  wink  Enjoy ... just be patience

" If the El Nino hits hard, this season' s  2.5m tons is all we' ll have to sell," he added.

Prices out of Peru recently settled at around  $1,600 &ndash $1,620 per metric ton  for super prime fishmeal, a  big jump  from  $1,450-$1,460 last December.

Fishmeal players hold off on orders for now as season makes early start

April 24, 2014, 1:15 pm

As the year&rsquo s first anchovy season in Peru  kicks off to an early start, fishmeal sellers out of Peru are holding off on booking too many orders for now in anticipation of a firm market ahead.

A potential high level of small anchovy in the catch could see Peru' s first fishing season hit by several ' mini-bans' on fishing, three large Peruvian producers told  Undercurrent News.

This, combined with uncertainty over  this year' s El Nino effect  and over demand in China, coupled with relatively low inventories in Peru and a moderate fishing quota, mean prices are expected to remain firm if not go up in the coming months, said the exporters.

Prices out of Peru recently settled at around $1,600 &ndash $1,620 per metric ton for super prime fishmeal, a big jump from  $1,450-$1,460 last December.

" We are waiting to see how the fishing goes before selling," said one producer, who said he expected prices to stay at those levels for the coming season.

One producer said they had sent vessels out as soon as the season opened at midnight on Wednesday April 23, but had not caught anything yet.

Research from Peru' s marine institute Imarpe has suggested that the stock will have high levels of juvenile fish, said this supplier. " So maybe we will have a mini-ban during this season. It' s not sure we' ll be able to complete our TAC."

" We have to keep monitoring Peruvian fishing conditions &ndash probably mini bans due to juveniles &ndash as well as weather conditions in China to forecast the next prices. In this very moment, prices are firm," said another exporter.

This exporter said he expects prices to be in the range of $1,600 to $1,700 for this year' s season, FOB Peru, super prime meal.

Prices in Shanghai are now said to be around CNY 10,000 ($1,618) per metric ton, compared to CNY 9,600 last December. Prices in China are up by CNY 100-500 depending on the port and the grade, said  one exporter.

Peru, meanwhile, is said to have pre-sold some 90,000 to 100,000 metric tons of fishmeal from the coming season &mdash representing catches of around 420,000t.  The TAC for the year&rsquo s first season was set at 2.5 million tons.

Although there is room to book more, the sellers said they are not in a hurry to seal orders right now, and buyers are also waiting to have a better overview of demand in China.

" The market hasn&rsquo t reached an equilibrium," said one. " It' s hard to say at what level prices will stabilize, it will depend on the catch and  if  the weather and aquaculture season is good in China.  But I don' t think prices will go down."

" If the El Nino hits hard, this season' s 2.5m tons is all we&rsquo ll have to sell," he added.

The demand in China, the biggest fishmeal market, will be a key factor. Last year, a poor aquaculture season sent Chinese demand plummeting and prices dropping &mdash albeit from very high levels &ndash   in the second half of the year.

According to the Peruvian producers canvassed by  Undercurrent,  demand in China is looking firm at the moment, but weather conditions are still uncertain.

" In  the south the weather is good, farmers are foreseeing a good demand from aquaculture, as long as there are no sudden big rains for a long time," said one exporter, commenting on China. On the other hand, he said, " the pig situation is still very bad."

China is reporting to have some 253,000t in inventories, he added. " Off-takes are good, mainly because users were scared and filled their warehouses with current stocks due to expect poor fishing in Peru."

The fishing situation in Peru will become clearer in the next few days,  while the situation in China will become clearer by May/ June.

" We have to wait until weather conditions improve in China in the next weeks to see the real demand," said one producer. " Chinese buyers are waiting for weather conditions to  improve to see the real demand, they also are not in a rush to buy due to the current stock as well as the pending arrivals coming to Chinese ports. The real demand would come during June."

It is important to know that they are doing the right thing. Haha ... on hindsight they have definitely bought Copeinca at a cheap price.  Well done for staying ahead of the competition.

Three bidders behind Pesquera Diamante

China Investment funds are primarily interested in the company. Company would be valued at $850 million.  Operation be defined in four weeks.

Again the waves move in the fisheries sector.  And is that Asian companies continue shopping in Peru.  Targeted by Pesquera Diamante are at least three companies, according to management could know  every indication that the principal is interested in buying the Chinese investment fund Fosun, which even have the bank Credit Suisse as an adviser to take fisheries mentioned.  Fosum was founded in 1992 and is making strides to become an investment group that accompanies the growth of China.  However, our sources said Fosun addition, two other investment funds interested in Diamond, the price to pay would reach $850 million.

The version becomes stronger if you consider that a year ago also raised version of a possible sale.  In February 2013 there was talk that the Korean Dongwon Fisheries Industries have launched a bid to buy the Peruvian company would pay for the entirety of between $600 million and $800 million.

Several sources said this newspaper that the brothers Jose Enrique and Fernando Ribaudo and the Focus fund, which owns 18.5% of Diamante, are interested in selling the company.  Even this would be set to a maximum of four weeks.  Keep in mind that fishing is not listed on the stock exchange.

FACTS AND FIGURES
Area.
Currently, Diamante has 18% of the national catch mackerel and mackerel.

Fleet.  Pesquera Diamante has seven operating boats, and by the end of 2013 should get three more, in addition to two tuna boats.

Operations Center.  The company also looks more expansions in 2014 in plants, focusing on the north-central part of the country. Currently has eight floors.

Fish are getting more expensive, but they do not all move at the same speed

IT IS a good time to be a fisherman. The global fish-price index of the UN&rsquo s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) hit a record high in May. Changing consumer diets, particularly in China, explain much of the sustained upward movement. High oil prices, which increase the cost of fishing and transportation, also add to the price of putting fish on the table.

Not all fish are created equal, however. There are two types of fish production: " capture" (or wild) and " aquaculture" (or farmed). And they seem to be on different trajectories. Fish such as tuna, the majority of which is caught wild, saw much bigger price increases than salmon, which are easier to farm. Overall, the FAO' s price index for wild fish nearly doubled between 1990 and 2012, whereas the one for farmed fish rose by only a fifth. What explains this big difference ?
The amount of wild fish captured globally has barely changed in the past two decades. The ceiling, of about 90m tonnes a year, seems to have been reached at the end of the 1980s. Overfishing is one reason, as is the limited room for productivity growth, particularly if consumers want high quality.

Patrice Guillotreau of the University of Nantes tells the story of a fleet in France that decided to trawl, rather than line-catch, its tuna. It brought more back to shore, but the fish were damaged. It could not be sold as high-value fillets and was only good for canning. The old ways of catching fish are still best if you want the highest profits, says Mr Guillotreau.

In contrast, the farmed-fish industry continues to make productivity improvements. Fish farms have found crafty ways to use lower quantities of fishmeal as feed. In the early days of aquaculture, it could take up to ten pounds of wild fish to produce one pound of salmon. Now the number is down to five. That may still be an inefficient use of protein, but the ratio is set to improve further. Fish farms have also become more energy-efficient, meaning that they are less affected by higher energy prices. And they have learned how to handle diseases better, reducing the quantity of fish that ends up being unsellable.

As a result of all these improvements, the global production of farmed fish, measured in tonnes, now exceeds the production of beef (see chart). Output is likely to continue growing: the FAO estimates that by 2020 it will reach six times its 1990 level.

This growth will further shake up the markets for fish. The farmed kind is expected to dominate the market for medium-value produce. Suppliers of wild fish, for their part, must slither into niche markets. At the low-value end wild sardine is a crucial input for farmed fish and is in abundant supply. More than a third of the total marine catch in 2010 was used for the production of fishmeal and fish oil.

But more money may be made serving the captains of industry rather than industry itself. Sapmer, a French fishing company, recently discontinued its canned-tuna production, instead concentrating on catching tuna for sushi and sashimi for the top end of the market.

Frank Asche of the University of Stavanger, who helped to devise the FAO fish-price index, sees parallels with the divergence between farmed meat and wild game. As the supply of wild fish declines relative to farmed fish, it will become a luxury commodity, he explains. " In 20 years' time people will think of wild fish like we now think of venison."

The BB is still support .. much due to the low free float so it is susceptible to the market movement.

Stockpiler has mentioned " .....   in such a market, the price would go wild if there is a demand for it." Generally the BB goes wild when the volume hit 10,000 lots.

What we do know is " The BB has consolidated their position after the acquisition and completed the comprehensive refinancing.  Ng Joo Siang, China Fishery managing director said  " Our strategy of acquisition and consolidation of business in Peru is translating into strong growth for the Group,"

Market is wanting to see  how the integration of the enlarged fishmeal operation during the second quarter of FY2014."
At this moment, there is no catalyst to pent up the demand. Relax and be patience  smiley  Enjoy your weekends

Interesting article for your reading pleasure while waiting for your reply. Chill, relax and enjoy fishing

Quotas, Productivity and Prices : The Case of Anchovy Fishing

I exploit a 2009 reform that introduced individual fishing quotas (catch shares) for Peruvian anchovy &ndash the largest fishery in the world &ndash to assess the causal impact of production quotas on within-firm productivity and market prices. Unique features of the data allow me to create two alternative counterfactuals: (i) anchovy fishing operations in a region of the country that was mandated to implement quotas with a delay, and (ii) variation in quota allocations across ships. I find that quotas do not increase within-asset or within-firm productivity in quantities. Instead, a 200% increase in anchovy prices benefits extraction firms through higher revenues, consistent with two mechanisms enacted by individual fishing quotas: more orderly industry operations reducing excess supply and an increase in bargaining power of extraction firms with respect to fish-processing. Several market characteristics across geographies differentially affect market prices after the quota regime. Supplementary evidence on fewer operational infractions, higher product quality, and a lower banking delinquency observed during the quota regime suggests the existence of efficiency gains rather than purely rent transfers.

In the absence of news, shortists are at work .. for the past few days, they have shorted this counter. Also, the time-keeper is watching the BB. Like Leongsan has mentioned watched out for the quota news and possibly Fosun acquisition of Diamante because it is going to make wave in the fishing industry.

Funds are already in, market value is up .... just got to know the equilibrium of the stock (where it is heading). Recommendation from Analysts are HOLD await news

Hope it answer your question. Cheers
