AI Overview

Yes, United Overseas Bank (UOB) is directly affected by the $1.3 billion loan issue in Hong Kong, as it is the lender for a loan tied to the Shimao Group' s luxury  Beacon Peak development
The loan' s maturity was extended by UOB because attempts to sell it to  private credit investors  failed, highlighting the ongoing difficulty in the Hong Kong property market and the bank' s need to avoid booking losses.

Here' s a breakdown of the situation:
  • The Loan:
UOB extended a loan facility worth approximately $1.3 billion (HK$10 billion) to the Shimao Group for the Beacon Peak luxury apartment complex in Hong Kong.

  • The Problem:
The loan was due on September 30, and Shimao failed to sell the facility to private credit funds, according to people familiar with the matter.

  • UOB' s Response:
To avoid booking losses from a prolonged property slump and a failed sale, UOB extended the loan' s maturity.

  • Market Impact:
The prolonged slump in Hong Kong' s property market has made it difficult for developers like Shimao to raise cash.  UOB is forced to " kick the can down the road" by extending the loan to mitigate potential losses.

  • Consequences for UOB:
The bank' s exposure to this loan is growing and has become a significant liability rather than a simple lending success.

Thanks for confirming my statement that net income can' t cover both CapEx and dividend payouts.

STE has a garbaga balance sheet with massive useless goodwill balance and huge debt load.

No wonder STE started selling off their profitable businesses to pay down their huge debt.

$3.6B TransCore acquisition in 2022 destroyed their balance sheet, and made it over-indebted.
overpaying for useless business under USS segment, which can' t generate any meaningful profit, sad $12m in EBIT in H1 2025.

30-June-2025 balance sheet:

total shareholder equity:  2,714,625,000
intangibles (goodwill, etc):  4,514,124,000

net tangible book value: NEGATIVE SGD $1.8B

Good luck holding STE )

Don't mislead here lah.

It's not net profit minus dividend and capital expenditures.

What we look at is net operating cash flows minus all other cash flows (incl dividend and cap ex )

If the company is generating enough cash from operations to pay for dividends, repay debts and spend on stuff, then we are okay.

Otherwise we have to borrow.

If STeng has been repaying debt, it means it has generated enough cash from operations.

So STEng is financially healthy.

Maintain buy with price target above 1

Venture Corp Q2 profit edges up to S$57.1 million H1 earnings remain lower
Profit for H1 down 8.6% at S$113 million

[SINGAPORE] Technology solutions provider Venture Corp posted a 2.3 per increase in net profit to S$57.1 million for its second quarter ended June 2025, up from S$55.9 million in the previous quarter.

Revenue rose 4.7 per cent to S$645.3 million for the period, from S$616.6 million in Q1, the mainboard-listed group said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday (Aug 6). The increase was driven by growth across most of its technology domains.

However, for H1 2025, the group saw an 8.6 per cent drop in net profit to about S$113 million, from S$123.7 million the year before.

Revenue for the period fell 8.8 per cent to S$1.3 billion, from S$1.4 billion previously.

Venture attributed the decline to softer customer demand for its lifestyle technology offerings, as well as improved reliability and longevity of a customer&rsquo s key product &ndash due to the group&rsquo s research and development and design efforts &ndash which triggered fewer product replacements.

Earnings per share (EPS) for Q2 stood at S$0.198, up slightly from S$0.193 in Q1. For the first half of the year, EPS fell to S$0.392, from S$0.426 a year ago.

The company declared a total dividend of S$0.30 per share this comprised a S$0.25 interim dividend and a S$0.05 special dividend, up from an interim dividend of S$0.25 in H1 2024. The dividend will be paid on Sep 12, after the books are closed on Sep 2.

Venture generated net cash of S$149.8 million in H1, down from S$270.3 million the year before. However, its working capital position improved by S$119.1 million, driven by lower inventories and better trade receivables and payables.

The group acknowledged ongoing uncertainties from the broad-based US tariffs and continued softness in the lifestyle segment. Still, it said it remains confident in its ability to &ldquo turn volatility into opportunities&rdquo , citing its resilient business model and strong balance sheet.

Singapore Airlines has sounded a note of optimism, despite the global uncertainty.
It said it has S$10 billion in fixed deposits and another S$3.3 billion in undrawn credit lines to withstand any slowdown in business. These include the potential impact of shifting tariff policies and geopolitical uncertainty.
Still, the firm said the challenges ahead pale in comparison to those it faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
SIA has announced more than 7.45 months worth of bonuses for its employees amid a record annual profit of S$2.8 billion.

DBS is planning to introduce a " capital return dividend" of 15 cents per share per quarter in 2025, as part of a three-year plan to manage excess capital, in addition to its regular quarterly dividends.

Here' s a more detailed breakdown:
Capital Return Dividend:
DBS will pay an additional 15 cents per share as a capital return dividend on top of its regular quarterly dividends.
Duration:
This capital return dividend is planned for financial year 2025 and is expected to continue in the subsequent two years, with DBS aiming to return excess capital through various mechanisms.
Total Dividend:
The total yearly dividend assumes that the bank' s quarterly dividend remains steady at 60 cents as well as its capital return of 15 cents per share per quarter
Purpose:
This initiative aims to manage down the stock of excess capital over the coming three years.
Other Mechanisms:
DBS expects to pay out a similar amount of capital either through this capital return dividend or other mechanisms in the subsequent two years.
